Felix Doubront has signed with Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League.
Doubront spent the 2021 season with the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League, registering a 3.42 ERA and 67/23 K/BB ratio in 14 starts covering 84 1/3 innings. The 34-year-old left-hander last pitched in the majors back in 2015 with the Athletics.
Doubront (elbow) could return from Tommy John surgery as a reliever, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
Doubront is slated to return in June. A move to the bullpen could be exactly what the lefty needs. Although he has shown promise in a starting role thanks to his sharp stuff, Doubront has struggled with control issues throughout his career. In the bullpen, where he could go all out for a single inning and maximize the movement and velocity of his pitches, those control issues may be less of a hindrance. He'll be a long way from getting saves in Oakland, though, so his fantasy value is likely to be minimal.
Doubront (elbow) was reassigned to minor league camp Sunday.
The left-hander is still in the process of returning from Tommy John surgery, so while he's still unable to help out at the major league level, the A's will stash him in the minor leagues. If he returns to his previous form once healthy, Doubront could push for a spot in Oakland's rotation, but for now he'll simply focus on rehabbing his surgically-repaired elbow.
Doubront (elbow) could begin incorporating curveballs in his next bullpen sessions, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
The left-hander threw his first bullpen session since Tommy John surgery back in mid-February, and it seems that each session since then has gone without a hitch. If everything goes as planned, Doubront should be able to progress to live BP sessions later in the month with a clearer timetable for return to follow each step in his recovery.
