Elias Díaz is on the bench in favor of Martín Maldonado for a second straight game Friday against the Cubs.
The Padres didn’t play Thursday, so this is three straight days off for Díaz, who presumably doesn’t need it. A legitimate contender going with Martín Maldonado as its starting catcher in the year 2025 seems a little crazy, but it’s not like Díaz is more than a placeholder, either.
Padres signed C Elias Díaz to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
The deal, which had been agreed to earlier in the week, is now official. The 34-year-old backstop hit .265/.313/.382 with six long balls and 39 RBI in 351 plate appearances between the Rockies and Padres in 2024. He’ll share the load behind the plate with Luis Campusano but is unlikely to suddenly return to relevance from a fantasy perspective.
Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reports the Padres are re-signing Elias Díaz to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
Díaz will presumably split the catching duties next season with Luis Campusano in San Diego. The 34-year-old veteran backstop hit six homers last year in 96 games between the Padres and Rockies. He’s a complete non-factor for fantasy purposes outside of extremely deep two-catcher formats and even that might be a stretch.
Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports that the Orioles have expressed interest in veteran free agent backstop Elias Díaz.
The Orioles are known to be in the market for help behind the plate as James McCann hits free agency and it’s believed they will be casting a wide net. Díaz, 34, had a down season by his standards in 2024, slashing a mere .265/.313/.382 with just six homers and 39 RBI in 351 plate appearances between the Rockies and Padres. He would represent a solid, if unspectacular, backup option for the O’s behind Adley Rutschman and they wouldn’t have to break the bank to bring him in.
