Eduardo Núñez has announced his retirement from baseball.

Núñez did so Thursday on his personal Instagram page. The versatile 35-year-old appeared in 858 major league games for five different teams while posting a .276/.310/.404 lifetime batting line with 776 hits, 58 home runs, and 142 stolen bases. He was a one-time All-Star in 2016 with the Twins and won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2018.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster and essentially ends his season. Nunez made the Mets' Opening Day roster, but only appeared in two games before injuring his left knee.

Nunez suffered the injury on Sunday when he landed awkwardly after beating out an infield single. It was originally diagnosed as a hyperextended left knee. There's no timetable for his return.
