Cubs selected the contract of LHP Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Iowa.
Pomeranz was acquired from Seattle on Monday in a trade, and now the 36-year-old will have a chance to help the Cubs’ bullpen and make his first MLB appearance since 2021.
Cubs acquired LHP Drew Pomeranz from the Mariners for cash considerations.
The deal is now official. Pomeranz will head to Triple-A Iowa for now, but figures to be headed to the big leagues in the coming days as extra relief depth for Chicago. The 36-year-old southpaw hasn’t pitched in the majors since the 2021 campaign.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Cubs are acquiring Drew Pomeranz from the Mariners.
Rosenthal adds that Pomeranz has an upward mobility clause in his minor league contract with Seattle, which means they had to offer him to every other club in the majors, and either promote him themselves or trade him if another team was willing to put him on their big-league roster. The 36-year-old southpaw has posted strong numbers this season at Triple-A Tacoma, but hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2021, mostly due to injury.
Mariners re-signed LHP Drew Pomeranz to a minor league contract.
Pomeranz tossed a scoreless inning on Friday for Triple-A Tacoma as he attempts to make it back to the big leagues for the first time since 2021. The 36-year-old lefty has been derailed by shoulder issues the last few years, but he looked sharp in spring training. It wouldn’t be a shock to see him get a chance with the Mariners at some point down the road.
