Fowler, who made the announcement on his personal Twitter account, didn't make an appearance in the majors last season after signing a minor league contract with the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old outfielder made his lone All-Star Game appearance and also won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016. His signature moment came when he walloped a leadoff homer for Chicago in Game 7 of the Fall Classic. He wraps up a 14-year career that includes stints with the Rockies, Astros, Cubs, Cardinals and Angels. He finishes with a .259/.358/.417 triple-slash line with 127 home runs and 149 stolen bases across 5,902 plate appearances in 1,460 games since 2008.

Fowler requested and was granted his release by Toronto after appearing in just three games at Triple-A Buffalo this season. The 36-year-old veteran outfielder appeared in just seven games last year with the Angels before tearing the ACL in his left knee. It's possible he's able to find another opportunity, but will likely have to settle for another minor league contract.

Fowler just finished up a perhaps ill-advised five-year, $82.5 million contract that he signed with the Cardinals back in 2017. The 36-year-old outfielder appeared in only seven major league games last season with the Angels before suffering a torn ACL in his right knee. He's slashed just .219/.320/.367 over his last 1,030 plate appearances since the beginning of 2018. In other words, it's a low-impact move all around.
