The 36-year-old appeared in four games in the NLDS this postseason, going 4-for-8 with two runs scored over the series. Over his 11-year career, Freese recorded a slash line of .277/.351/.423 with 113 home runs, 1,041 hits and 535 RBI. Freese was named the World Series MVP in 2011 while playing for the Cardinals.

Manager Dave Roberts indicated Wednesday that Freese would likely start Thursday, but he will officially bat second against southpaw Patrick Corbin and play first base. Max Muncy will shift to second base with Gavin Lux on the bench Thursday.

Lefty Patrick Corbin with take the mound for the Nationals in the series opener, providing Freese the chance to start, likely at first base. The veteran infielder was limited to 186 plate appearances this season but looked great with a .315/.403/.599 slash line and 11 home runs in 79 games.

Freese came on as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and launched a ball over the wall in right center field for his 11th long ball of the season. The 36-year-old has shown no signs of rust since coming off the injured list Monday, going 2-for-3 with a pair of homers and a walk in three games.
