Eveland was released by the Rays on Wednesday, SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports.
He had a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 spring innings, so the move comes as something of a surprise, but perhaps Eveland found out he was unlikely to break camp with the big league club and requested his release. Regardless of where he lands, he will simply serve as organizational bullpen depth.
Dana Eveland signed a minor league contract with the Rays.
After a superb effort at Triple-A, he struggled in Tampa Bay in 2016, posting a 9.00 ERA and 2.22 WHIP over 23 innings. He needs to show better command and control to succeed at the major league level, something he can work on while waiting for a bullpen slot to open in Tampa Bay.
After being put on waivers by the Rays reliever Dana Eveland has opted for free agency.
Eveland struggled this past season, accruing a 9.00 ERA and 2.22 WHIP. There isn't going to be a strong market for him in the offseason, but if a team gets hit with some injuries during spring training, they could inquire about Eveland. He's not worthy of drafting in fantasy league however.
Dana Eveland was outrighted to Triple-A Durham.
The southpaw struggled while with the Rays this season. He appeared in 33 games for Tampa, but posted an awful 9.00 ERA and 2.22 WHIP over 23 innings. He is designated to serve as organizational depth, nothing more at this time.
