There hasn't been a formal retirement announcement, but this appears to be as close as we're likely to get from a player who elected to step away from the game in midseason in each of the last two years. Assuming he's done for good this time, Rasmus will end a 10-year career with a .241/.310/.436 slash line, 891 hits and 166 homers.

Per Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun, manager Buck Showalter said that Rasmus told him he was ready to "discontinue his career" and step away from the team. By being placed on the restricted list, he will be removed from the active and 40-man roster. Around a similar time last season, Rasmus landed on the restricted list with Tampa Bay after informing the organization that he would be stepping away from the game. It remains to be seen whether Rasmus will be back with the Orioles this year, as Showalter added that his reasons are private and will not be shared.

Rasmus was held out of the starting lineup due to an illness, but his condition improved enough to get him into the game. That presumably means he'll be available when the Orioles head to Philadelphia for a two-game series that begins Tuesday.

With Rasmus under the weather, Jace Peterson will pick up a start in right field. The Orioles have an open date on the schedule Monday, so Ramsus will get two full days to recuperate before potentially rejoining the lineup Tuesday in Philadelphia.
