Cliff Lee is leaning towards retirement from baseball.
It has been better than a year and a half since the crafty pitcher has been on the bump at any level. A torn flexor tendon is what he's been trying to come back from but at 37 it's proving to be too hard a task. There were reportedly 15 teams interested in the free agent's services this offseason but that interest is moot now. Lee finishes his career with a 143-91 record and 3.52 ERA in 13 seasons, if this is indeed the end.
Cliff Lee is hoping to find a perfect situation for him to pitch in 2016.
If Lee doesn't find that situation, he will likely retire. That perfect situation would likely involve going to a playoff team, but most playoff teams probably don't have room for Lee in their rotations. Lee could pull a Roger Clemens and sign with some team in May and only play in the second half, which may be the best thing for him. Even if Lee does find the perfect situation, he would be nothing more than a late-round lottery ticket in mixed leagues.
GM Jon Daniels says the Rangers will look at Cliff Lee, trying to come back from a torn flexor tendon, but expects he'll be too pricey if healthy.
Assuming he is healthy, he will command a hefty price tag in free agency. He is a former Cy Young winner, after all is said and done.
Reports from the winter meetings indicate that free agent Cliff Lee has drawn interest from 15 teams.
It was going to be interesting how many teams would talk to Lee and his agent and at least half of Major League baseball have. The former Cy Young hasn't pitched in a year and a half and will turn 38 in August. He'll get a shot somewhere if he wants to continue to pitch, though it's not clear as to how effective he will be.
