Heisey never stood much of a chance to crack the active roster, and his .444 OPS in 36 spring plate appearances affirmed that notion. He has a wealth of big-league experience that could prove to be helpful in a minor-league deal, but his career numbers in the big leagues are nothing to get excited about.

Heisey appeared in just 38 games for the Nationals last season due to a pair of injuries, struggling to a .162/.215/.270 slash line across 79 plate appearances when healthy. An impressive spring could help the 33-year-old break camp as a reserve outfielder, though he'll likely serve as organizational outfield depth in 2018. He owns a combined .216/.276/.387 slash line across the past five seasons.

The Nationals' recent acquisition of outfielder Howie Kendrick coupled with the fact that Heisey has been sidelined with a groin injury led to the veteran outfielder being released by the club with whom he'd spent the last two seasons. The 32-year-old, who is hitting just .162 in 79 plate appearances this season, will look to pick up with a new organization.

This marks the first time that Heisey tested out his groin on the bases after landing on the disabled list Sunday. The outfielder should be able to return once he's eligible, as this appears to be a minor setback. Throughout the course of the year in the big league, Heisey is hitting .162/.215/.270 in just 38 games, but should have no problem wrestling away playing time in the thin Washington outfield.
