Red Sox released Casey Janssen on Sunday.
Janssen the veteran relief pitcher appeared in 14 minor league contests for the Red Sox while splitting 2016 between Triple-A Pawtucket and Short-Season Single-A Lowell. Over the course of 15.2 innings of work in all, Janssen tallied a respectable 2.87 ERA with one save and 12 strikeouts against four walks this season. He made no appearances in the majors this season.
Red Sox have a minor league deal with P Casey Janssen. He’ll report to Lowell at first before going to Pawtucket.
Boston found a cheap way to add an arm for the bullpen, but he'll need to show his skills at the minor league level before getting the call to the big league. Janssen has 90 saves and a 3.63 ERA for his career.
Padres RP Casey Janssen was granted his release Thursday.
2013 seems like it was 10-years ago for Janssen. He had 34 saves that year and in 2016 he's been released before the season has even begun. Janssen is 34-years old, so he'll likely try and catch on with another team. He wasn't very good in the 48 appearances he made out of the Nationals bullpen last season.
Padres manager Andy Green says RHP Casey Janssen has a legitimate chance to factor into the Padres bullpen.
The legitimate shot comes from lack of depth, because Janssen was underwhelming with the Rangers last season with his 4.95 ERA. He does have closing experience and did have 81 saves from 2012-2014. The fact that the team traded Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit also increases his chances as a shot to pitch in the bullpen.
