J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group reported on Thursday that the two sides were close, and now it appears to be official. He's likely to serve as organizational infield depth for the Dodgers and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group reports that the Dodgers are close to finalizing a minor league deal with Carlos Asuaje.

Asuaje was released by the Cubs back in May of 2020 after signing a minor league deal with Chicago. He's capable of playing several spots in the infield and in the outfield, but he's hit just .240/.312/.329 in his brief time in the majors. It's unlikely he provides anything more than organizational depth in 2021.

Asuaje -- who inked a minor league deal back in January -- is one of several cuts that the Cubs made on Thursday. The 28-year-old is a career .240/.312/.329 hitter over parts of three major league seasons.

Asuaje signed a minor-league contract with Chicago on Monday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

Asuaje spent the 2019 season in Arizona's farm system, slashing .239/.339/.403 with five home runs and 29 RBI for Triple-A Reno. He hasn't made an appearance in the big leagues since the 2018 campaign while with San Diego, though he'll have a chance to crack the 25-man roster for the Cubs to begin the year with a strong spring.
