Wilson said Thursday that he's turning his primary focus toward race car driving and the auto dealership that he owns, but hasn't formally announced his retirement from professional baseball, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. "I don't know. If the situation was right, maybe," Wilson said, in reference to his future in baseball. "But right now I'm here at the dealership. The most attractive offer I had was to race this season."
Wilson, 36, made just a lone rehab appearance in the minors in 2016 before requiring season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder in July. Given his advancing age and poor health in recent years -- along with the fact that his production waned when he was healthy enough to pitch during his final three seasons with the Angels -- Wilson unsurprisingly attracted few interested suitors upon hitting free agency this winter, but it was still expected that he'd pitch in a showcase at some point in February. For the time being, it appears the showcase may no longer be in the cards, which would likely be the death knell for a potential comeback.
C.J. Wilson, who had shoulder surgery in July, began throwing over a month ago and is progressing steadily. He could have a possible showcase in February.
Fraying in his labrum and repair to his rotator cuff is what cause him to miss the whole of the 2016 season. However prior to that, and the bone spurs surgery since then, he was a workhorse pitcher for Texas and Anaheim averaging 204 IP a season between 2010-2014. Miami has been mentioned as a suitor however there could be more teams interested depending on how well the 36-year-old southpaw pitches in the showcase. There shouldn't be any meaningful fantasy value coming from him until perhaps the second half of the 2017 season.
Angels reinstated C.J. Wilson from the 60-day disabled list.
Wilson is coming off of mid-season shoulder surgery. He is also a free agent this winter, and is turning 36 in November, so the lefty may be looking for a new team to pitch for in 2017.
Update: C.J. Wilson will have shoulder surgery next week.
This surgery will effectively end Wilson's season. Wilson was shutdown after 21 starts last season as he underwent Tommy John surgery. He should be ready for spring training next year.
