Mariners released RHP Brooks Pounders.
Pounders had been at Triple-A Tacoma, where he was knocked around in just three appearances. He hasn't seen any action in the majors since 2019.
Pounders signed with the Rays as a non-roster invitee Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The 29-year-old has 45.2 big-league innings under his belt, most recently pitching 7.1 innings for the Mets last season. With a career 8.47 ERA, his odds of filling a significant role for the Rays this season appear quite slim.
Pounders was designated for assignment by the Mets on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Pounders has made seven appearances for New York this season, posting a 6.14 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with five punchouts over 7.1 innings. Rajai Davis will take Pounders' place on the 40-man roster.
Pounders was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Pounders has struggled to find his stride since being traded to the Mets in mid-June, compiling a 6.14 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with five strikeouts over 7.1 innings out of the bullpen. He'll head down to the minors in an effort to gain back his confidence.
