Holt did so on his personal Instagram page with this message: "Damn it that was fun. For parts of 10 years I got to do the only thing I ever wanted to do ... play Major League Baseball. Today I hang them up knowing I did the best I could for me, my family, and my teammates. I'm proud of every single second of it." The 34-year-old utilityman finishes with 621 hits and a career .262/.332/.362 batting line in 751 major league games. He was an All-Star in 2015 and won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2018.

This may have been a courtesy move so that Holt can attempt to land with a new team before the beginning of the regular season. He inked a minor league contract with Atlanta earlier this month.

The 33-year-old slashed .209/.281/.298 over 260- plate appearances last season with the Rangers. Holt will act as organizational depth for the Braves.

Holt got caught up in a COVID-19 outbreak on the Rangers' last month despite being vaccinated. He returns Tuesday to a .208/.286/.295 batting line in 67 games (231 plate appearances) for the season.
