Matusz was the fourth overall selection in the 2008 MLB Draft and went on to spend eight seasons in the big leagues between the Orioles and Cubs from 2009-2016 before retiring a couple years later. Matusz made 279 appearances (68 starts) for Baltimore from 2009-2016. He made one relief appearance for the Cubs during their championship season in 2016 and was rewarded with a World Series ring. Our thoughts are with the entire Matusz family at this time.

Matusz appeared in 11 games for Triple-A Reno, compiling a 6.11 ERA and 13:5 K:BB over 17.2 innings. The 30-year-old, who made eight appearances at the big-league level with the Orioles and Cubs a season ago, will aim to land another minor-league deal with a new organization.

Matusz endured a tumultuous 2016 with a back injury and poor performance upon returning. Of course, the left-hander performed well as a late-innings reliever for the Orioles, so if he can revisit his past success, Arizona could give him another crack at a big-league role in 2017.

After three years of quality work in a setup role for the Orioles, the bottom fell out for Matusz in 2016. The 30-year-old opened last season on the DL while nursing a back injury and didn't look the same upon returning, serving up 14 runs over a combined nine innings at the big-league level with the Orioles and Cubs. Assuming he enters spring training in better health, Matusz could return to form and claim a 40-man roster spot for the Diamondbacks, who boast one of the majors' weaker bullpens.
