Dozier spent a little bit of time with the Mets in 2020 but went 2-for-15 (.133) in seven games before getting released in late August. The 33-year-old infielder officially wraps up his nine-year major league career having posted a lifetime .244/.325/.441 batting line with 1,055 hits, 192 home runs, and 105 stolen bases.

Dozier signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Sunday that includes an invitation to big-league camp, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Dozier won the World Series with Washington last season on a one-year deal, but he wasn't able to link up with a new team until after the start of spring training. The veteran second baseman got off to a slow start in 2019 but finished with a .238/.340/.430 slash line and 20 home runs in 135 games.

Dozier went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 5-2 victory against the Phillies on Wednesday.

This was the 32-year-old first home run since Aug. 18 and also his 20th long ball of the season. That means Dozier has extended his streak of six straight years with at least 20 home runs. He is batting .234 with 39 extra-base hits, 48 RBI, 52 runs and three steals in 411 at-bats this season.

Dozier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

At least for the time being, Dozier appears to have surrendered his role as the Nationals' everyday second baseman to the red-hot Asdrubal Cabrera. Dozier has rebounded from a rough first two months to provide near-league-average production (99 wRC+) for the season, but that won't be enough for him to hold off Cabrera for work. Since signing with the Nationals in early August, Cabrera has slashed .328/.405/.578 (147 wRC+) in 74 plate appearances.
