Athletics selected RHP Brett Graves from the Marlins in the Triple-A Phase of the Rule 5 Draft.
It's a return to the A's organization after Graves was selected by the Marlins from the Athletics in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft. A third-round selection out of Missouri, Graves has appeared in 21 MLB games -- all in 2018 -- with a 5.40 ERA. He'll be depth for the organization in 2021, but could help the Oakland bullpen over the summer if necessary.
The Marlins assigned Graves to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports.
Graves stuck on the Marlins' roster all of last season as a Rule 5 pick, making 21 relief appearances and posting a 5.40 ERA and 21:12 K:BB in 33.1 innings. After being outrighted off the roster in December, Graves never had much of a chance at breaking camp with the big club for the second season in a row. He'll function as bullpen depth at Triple-A New Orleans.
Graves was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports.
Despite never having pitched at Triple-A, the 25-year-old made his major-league debut in 2018, posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB across 33.1 innings of relief.
Graves pitched a scoreless 10th inning Saturday to record his first career save in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Nationals.
After Drew Steckenrider blew the save in the ninth inning, Marlins manager Don Mattingly didn't have any other likely closer candidates available once the team re-took the lead in the top of the 10th, but Graves was able to get the job done despite throwing only seven of his 14 pitches for strikes. Given his 6.23 ERA on the season, don't look for the 25-year-old rookie to get many future save chances.
