Cubs declined RHP Brad Boxberger’s $5 million mutual option for 2024.
Boxberger will get an $800,000 buyout. The 35-year-old missed much of last season with a forearm strain and had a 4.95 ERA in the 20 innings that he pitched. He was very good the previous three seasons, amassing a 3.13 ERA in 146 2/3 innings, but he’s probably going to be looking at signing a minor league contract.
Cubs placed RHP Brad Boxberger on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 22, with a right forearm strain.
Boxberger heads back to the injured list just a few weeks after returning from a lengthy absence due to the same issue. The 35-year-old veteran reliever is likely finished for the rest of the season.
Cubs activated RHP Brad Boxberger from the 60-day injured list.
The 35-year-old made 17 early-season appearances for the Cubs before getting sidelined with a right forearm strain. He’s worked his way back through the minors with eight minor-league rehab appearances in August. Boxberger gave up runs in three of those showings while five were clean. Boxberger has a strong, 11.0 K/9 over the course of his 12-year career. With this move, the Cubs also optioned RHP Keegan Thompson to Triple-A.
Brad Boxberger (forearm) began a minor league rehab assignment on Sunday with Triple-A Iowa.
Boxberger has been on the shelf since mid-May due to a right forearm strain and will likely need a handful of additional rehab outings before he’s ready to rejoin Chicago’s late-inning relief mix.
