Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that the Mets have signed outfielder Billy McKinney to a minor league deal.
McKinney, 30, will assuredly report to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season. The former first-round pick has had mixed — at best — results in the majors, but offers some organizational depth for New York to begin the 2025 campaign.
Pirates sent OF Billy McKinney outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
McKinney was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday. The outfielder didn’t receive a claim on the waiver wire, so he sticks with the Pittsburgh organization.
Pirates designated OF Billy McKinney for assignment.
McKinney went 5-for-25 with a double and 13 strikeouts in 10 games for the Pirates. The 30-year-old is a quality Triple-A bat, but it’s never really translated.
Pirates selected the contract of 1B/OF Billy McKinney from Triple-A Indianapolis.
It’ll be the 2024 MLB debut for McKinney, who was hitting .295/.396/.450 in 40 games for Triple-A Indianapolis. Of course, hitting in Triple-A has never been any kind of problem for McKinney. Unfortunately, he’s come in at just .209/.284/.390 in 311 games over six major league seasons. The Pirates will give him some time against righties while Andrew McCutchen is out.
