The Mets assigned Caminero to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

With 149 career major-league appearances, Caminero was one of the more seasoned relievers vying for a bullpen gig at big-league camp. After spending the past two seasons in Japan before inking a minor-league deal with the Mets over the winter, Caminero struggled to make an impression this spring. He was lit up for seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings across four appearances.

Caminero spent the past two seasons in Japan, compiling a 3.18 ERA and 84:29 K:BB across 82 innings of relief. The veteran right-hander last pitched in the majors in 2016, when he posted a combined 3.56 ERA and 50:33 K:BB in 60.2 innings with the Pirates and Mariners. He'll compete for a middle relief role in spring training.

Arquimedes Caminero was ejected Wednesday after hitting Elvis Andrus with a pitch.

This came after Andrus and Mariners Dae-Ho Lee made contact with each other, so with the Ump smelling bad blood, he didn't waste any time tossing Caminero after he drilled Andrus with a 98 MPH heater. The switch pitcher Pat Venditte replaced him on the mound.
