2024 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: The veteran southpaw was great last year, as he posted a 3.09 ERA and 41.4 percent strikeout rate as a member of the Royals and Rangers. During the Rangers’ World Series run, Chapman posted a 2.25 ERA across eight innings in the postseason. He’s not a guy who generates a ton of swings out of the zone, but he racks up whiffs in bunches, including posting a 17.5 percent swinging strike rate last year, which was his second-highest mark over his last seven seasons!
2024 Outlook: David Bednar figures to have the lead on the closing job in Pittsburgh to begin the year, but in SV+H leagues, Chapman should be a great target for fantasy managers. He’ll rack up holds for a Pittsburgh team that should be half-decent in 2024, and he’s the next man up for saves should anything happen to Bednar. Expect Chapman to be moved by the trade deadline in the summer, but if you need innings, strikeouts, holds, and maybe some saves from a reliever in the later rounds of your draft, Chapman would be a fine target.
