Reyes has not pitched since 2021 as he has undergone multiple shoulder surgeries with the most recent occurring in 2023. The 30-year-old was once considered the best pitching prospect in baseball and has had success, but to say that he’s an unknown at this stage is quite the understatement.

Reyes will receive a $100,000 buyout and become a free agent. The Dodgers rolled the dice on the 29-year-old former All-Star closer as a reclamation project last offseason with the hope that he could contribute sometime around midseason. Unfortunately, that never happened. Reyes underwent season-ending right shoulder surgery in early June and never ended up pitching for Los Angeles. He isn’t expected to be ready to contribute until the midway point of the 2024 season and hasn’t appeared on a big league mound since the 2021 campaign.

Reyes inked a one-year, $1.1 million contract this spring, and at the time, it looked like a great gamble by the Dodgers. Reyes, a once highly touted prospect and former All-Star closer, had surgery to repair a torn labrum last May. After ramping up earlier this spring, he felt renewed soreness, and more damage was found in a different area.

The procedural move opens up a spot on the Dodgers' 40-man roster for Austin Wynns to join the team. Reyes isn't expected to be an option for the Dodgers' bullpen until sometime around midseason as he continues his rehabilitation process from a frayed labrum in his right shoulder that caused him to miss all of last year.
