Ottavino was designated for assignment after the Yankees reinstated Ian Hamilton off the injured list. He’ll look for a new organization, but there’s a good chance he’ll have to settle for a minor league contract if he wants to continue pitching.

The Yankees just signed the 39-year-old on Monday, but with Ian Hamilton coming off the IL, they’ll jettison him after his second short stint on the roster this season. Ottavino can likely pitch in somebody’s bullpen in 2025, but it remains to be seen if the New York native is interested in playing somewhere else.

The Yankees had signed Ottavino last week when Devin Williams went on the Paternity List and then released Ottavino when Williams returned. Now Ottavino is back and will fill a spot in the Yankees bullpen.

Ottavino officially elected free agency on Sunday after refusing his outright assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Now it sounds like he’ll rejoin the Yankees in Detroit on Monday. Brent Headrick was optioned to Triple-A following Sunday’s game to free up a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen for Ottavino.
