The veteran reportedly had an opt-out in his contract which could be exercised if he wasn't on the major-league roster by today, so the two parties elected to part ways. Lind hit a strong .303/.362/.513 in a part-time role for the Nationals last season, though his minor-league numbers are poor this year, as he's struggled to a .245/.300/.424 line. That may or may not be enough for another team to take a shot on the 35-year-old as a potential platoon bat.

Lind's contract contains a clause that would have allowed him to become a free agent if he weren't promoted to Boston by July 1, but he'll stick with the organization for at least a little while longer with the hope of earning his way back to the majors. The 34-year-old, who is slashing .263/.321/.455 across 109 plate appearances with Pawtucket, seems unlikely to receive the call to the big club so long as Mitch Moreland remains healthy and productive as Boston's primary first baseman.

Lind opted out of his minor-league contract with the Yankees on Friday after slashing .241/.302/.414 over 63 plate appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the season. He'll report to Triple-A Pawtucket and serve as first base depth for the Red Sox.

Lind signed a minor-league deal with New York in mid-April and was mostly providing organizational depth at first base. He was stationed at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the Yankees decided to part ways with the 34-year-old.
