2025 Player Outlook

After a failed brief attempt to revive his career as a starting pitcher, Puk returned to the bullpen where he delivered a lights-out performance for the remainder of 2024. His average fastball velocity jumped a full tick after the trade to Arizona, where he was used as a high-leverage reliever. He likely returns to that role in 2025, but it looks to be closer by committee rather than a solidified role for Puk.

A.J. Puk closed out the Brewers in the ninth inning on Sunday, protecting a three-run lead to secure his third save of the season.

Justin Martinez was deployed against the heart of the Brewers’ lineup with a one-run lead in the eighth inning, so Puk was left to clean up the ninth after the Diamondbacks tacked on a couple of runs in the eighth. It wasn’t the smoothest of outings, as he hit Joey Ortiz and then walked Isaac Collins to bring the tying run to the plate, but he rebounded to strike out Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio to end it. He’ll continue to share save chances with Martinez based on the handedness of the opposing lineup it appears. On the season, Puk holds a 3.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 10/2 K/BB ratio over six innings while securing three saves.

A..J Puk allowed a home run and struck out one in an inning of work to earn the save on Wednesday against the Yankees.

Puk was called upon in a 4-0 game after Ryan Thompson allowed singles to Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge to start the ninth inning. Then, things got tight when Anthony Volpe hit a three-run home run into Yankee Stadium’s short porch, but Puk closed the door after that. Once again, the Diamondbacks went to Puk to close out the game and he seems to have a firm leg up on Justin Martinez for closing duties in the desert.

Despite giving up a homer to Ben Rice, A.J. Puk earned his first save Tuesday against the Yankees.

The first save of the year for the D-backs goes to the lefty. We’d still say Justin Martínez is the favorite for saves here, but the team definitely played it right tonight; Martinez pitched a perfect eighth, striking out Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe, before Puk got the lefty-filled bottom of the order in the ninth.
