Royals placed RHP Seth Lugo on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 14, with a right finger sprain.
Lugo was going to have his start skipped on Saturday regardless, but it’s a notable development that he’s going to get some extra time off to rest and recover with a trip to the injured list. The 35-year-old command-oriented veteran figures to be ready to rejoin Kansas City’s rotation at some point in early June, but there’s nothing official regarding his return timetable.
Royals placed LHP Cole Ragans on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain.
No word yet on the severity of the strain, which will determine how much time Ragans winds up missing. The 27-year-old fantasy ace was removed from Friday’s start against the Cardinals after re-aggravating a previous groin injury. It’s unclear how the Royals will fill his rotation spot next week. It’s a significant hit for Kansas City and fantasy managers since Ragans appears likely to require a multi-week absence given the nature of the injury.
Colton Coswer (thumb) took batting practice on Saturday.
Cowser remains on the 60-day injured list as he continues his rehabilitation process from late-March surgery to repair a fractured left thumb. The 25-year-old power/speed combo outfielder will likely need a couple weeks or minor league games to get back up to speed, but he should make it back to Baltimore’s lineup at some point in June.
Edward Cabrera (finger) will start on Monday against the Cubs.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough told reporters that Cabrera was able to throw on Saturday without any issues and he’s been cleared to make his next start. The 27-year-old righty had his previous outing pushed back a couple days due to a fingernail issue. It’s some much-needed clarity for fantasy managers as they look ahead to next week’s lineup period.
Tyler O’Neill (shoulder) remains out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Nationals.
It’ll be Ramón Laureano filling in for O’Neill on Saturday evening as he sits out his second straight contest due to a lingering shoulder issue. The 29-year-old slugging corner outfielder remains day-to-day for the moment.
Jackson Holliday is at second base and leading off on Saturday against the Nationals.
Holliday continues to get opportunities atop Baltimore’s lineup when they’re facing right-handed starters. The 21-year-old prodigy went 3-for-5 with an RBI during Friday’s series opener against the Nationals out of the seventh spot. He’s hitting .292/.333/.458 with two homers and four RBI over 12 games since May 1.
