PGA DFS Playbook for the Wells Fargo Championship: Top DraftKings & FanDuel PGA DFS Picks

Published: May 03, 2023
It was a solid week in Mexico for the PGA DFS playbook. While Jon Rahm did not win, he finished runner up to Tony Finau. I always feel good for a guy like Tony when he gets a victory because he’s done everything but win a major in his career. My one and done play Patrick Rodgers started slow but finished strong getting into the Top 10 by the end of the weekend. We saw once again why this Akshay Bhatia kid is going to be someone to watch in the coming years on the PGA Tour. While that event was terrific for growing the game of golf, we need to focus our attention on Charlotte, North Carolina for another designated event.
The PGA Tour travels north to the Quail Hollow Club for the Wells Fargo Championship. The course was overhauled before the 2017 PGA Championship was held here and it is now a par 71 with just three par 5's and four par 3's that stretches out nearly 7,600 yards. Players must score on the Par 5's to put themselves in position to contend over the weekend. Quail Hollow features six holes in which players have a better than average chance to make eagle. All of the Par 5's are reachable in two and two of the Par 4's are actually drivable for the bombers. We've also got three 200 plus yard Par 3s, one of which is 250 yards. It's no wonder that Rory McIlory has won this event three times including his very first PGA Tour victory because driving the golf ball is at a premium this weekend. Total driving stands out as the most important stat of the week.
There is a stacked field this weekend, but unlike major championships, we will be missing the Top 2 players in the world Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler. They both obviously picked this as their one skip of the season’s designated events. When you look over this field, despite those two big names out, you still have a ton of fantastic players and you can’t list all of them in the playbook. You have to pick your guys and stick with them. I know Rory did not look good at Augusta but this is his course and I’ll pay whatever to get him in my lineups this weekend. The value of the weekend is Justin Thomas even though my gut tells me it’s a trap, I just can’t ignore him under 9K especially on a course he has such a great track record on including winning the 2017 PGA Championship.
Bombers are definitely my primary target this weekend but we’ve seen course managers have success at this tournament because you need to know when to attack this golf course. The players need to do their homework on this track because it can break you down really quick. It is also an advantage if the golfer has great ball striking skills with their long irons and a terrific short game. Putting is always important but this course is not known for the most challenging greens.
The weather looks pretty good on tobacco road this weekend for the Wells Fargo. The forecast on Thursday and Friday is calling for partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 70s. As for the weekend, there is a 50 percent chance of rain in the afternoon and overnight on Saturday but should clear up in the morning for the final round on Sunday. There really is no advantage in tee times this weekend.
ONE AND DONE PLAY: CAMERON YOUNG

G | Rory McIlroy | 11100 | 12100
I’ve explained multiple times why Rory is a must play. I know he is expensive but I’m paying because I feel like he’s going to make a statement this weekend heading into the PGA Championship in a couple weeks. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Tony Finau | 10200 | 11800
Tony comes into this weekend in top form after taking down the Mexico Open. Finau also hasn’t missed a cut since November of 2022. He has made the cut at Quail Hollow in five of his six trips including three Top 30 finishes. The stats are electric this season for Tony ranking 1st in Approach, 3rd in Birdie Average, 4th in Scoring Average, 4th in Tee to Green, 11th in Greens in Regulation, 15th in Total Driving, 25th in Putting, and 27th in Off the Tee. The ownership will be high but don’t mess around and miss out on him this weekend. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Jordan Spieth | 9600 | 11600
Spieth paid off for us once again at Augusta with a Top 5 finish. He followed that up with a playoff loss to Matthew Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage. That playoff loss was his fourth Top 5 finish in his last six starts on tour. Jordan earned a week off last week and is ready for the Wells Fargo this weekend. While he is not a bomber off the tee, he does everything else well that you want for success at Quail Hollow. He made the cut in both of his trips to this course but his best finish was 28th at the 2017 PGA Championship. The 13 time winner on the PGA Tour ranks 11th in Birdie Average, 17th in Around the Green, 19th in Tee to Green, 22nd in Putting, 27th in Approach, 30th in Scoring Average, and 38th in Scrambling. I think he’ll fly under the radar this weekend because of his distance off the tee. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Viktor Hovland | 9200 | 10600
Viktor finished 59th in his last start at the RBC Heritage which was his worst result in 15 starts. He’s had an incredible run this season with 8 Top 15 finishes since his last missed cut in July of 2022. Hovland ranks 4th in Total Driving, 7th in Off the Tee, 11th in Scoring Average, 14th in Approach, 14th in Proximity, 15th in Birdie Average, 15th in Tee to Green, and 37th in Greens in Regulation. Viktor finished 3rd in his first trip to Quail Hollow in 2021, which should not be surprising knowing his strengths off the tee. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Jason Day | 9000 | 10300 | ||
Jason had Top 20 finishes in 11 of his 12 events prior to the Masters which is just unbelievable. It’s hard to pick between him and Rickie Fowler for comeback player of the year. Jason is a previous winner of the Wells Fargo in 2018 and four other Top 25 finishes at this event. The guy is playing like he’s in his mid-20s once again and it’s great to see. He currently ranks 2nd in Scrambling, 7th in Scoring Average, 11th in Tee to Green, 13th in Putting, 14th in Total Drive, 16th in Birdie Average, 19th in Around the Green, 24th in Approach, 27th in Greens in Regulation, and 37th in Off the Tee. This former number one player in the world has climbed back up to 34th. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Justin Thomas | 8900 | 11300
The 15 time winner on the PGA Tour has just seemed a bit off and hasn’t been able to close since his victory at the 2022 PGA Championship. He missed the cut at the Masters and followed that up with a 25th place at the RBC Heritage. I just can’t ignore him at under 9K this weekend on a course he’s won a major championship on. Despite the struggles to close, he does rank 1st in Around the Green, 8th in Tee to Green, 18th in Birdie Average, and 42nd in Total Driving, Off the Tee, and Approach. I believe he’ll make some noise this weekend against this field. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Rickie Fowler | 8800 | 10100
Another guy in the running for comeback player of the year but may fall short because of Jason Day. It’s hard to believe that Rickie only has five wins on the PGA Tour but one of them came right here at Quail Hollow but over a decade ago. He also has three other Top 10 finishes at the Wells Fargo. Fowler is on quite a run right now making the cut in 11 straight events with five Top 20 finishes in his last six starts. I really believe it’s only a matter of time before he wins again on tour. He currently ranks 8th in Approach, 10th in Birdie Average, 17th in Scoring Average, 17th in Tee to Green, 20th in Greens in Regulation, 31st in Total Driving, and 58th in Scrambling. It looks like he’s gotten his golf game back on track after getting married and having his first child. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Cameron Young | 8700 | 10900
The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year hasn’t missed the cut since the Scottish Open back in July of 2022. Over that run, he’s scored 7 Top 20 finishes which includes three runner ups. He finished runner up at the Wells Fargo last year but that was on a completely different course. I actually believe this course sets up even better for him than TPC Avenel did. He’s one of the better drivers of the golf ball on tour and that’ll come in handy this weekend. The 16th ranked player in the world ranks 4th in Birdie Average, 12th in Off the Tee, 16th in Total Driving, 18th in Approach, 18th in Tee to Green, and 30th in Putting Average. This is one of the most exciting young players to watch on the PGA Tour. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Sahith Theegala | 8200 | 9800
I hope you watched the Netflix series, “Full Swing” and saw the profile on this kid. He nearly won the rookie of the year if it weren’t for Cameron Young. There has been no sophomore slump for him scoring 7 Top 10 finishes already this season including the Masters. When you look over his stats on the season, there is no one part of his game that stands out above the rest but solid across the board. He ranks 9th in Putting Average, 14th in Birdie Average, 28th in Around the Greens, 35th in Scoring Average, 47th in Putting, 54th in Greens in Regulation, and 59th in Tee to Green. He may not be one of the bigger hitters on tour but definitely one of the smartest. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Keith Mitchell | 7800 | 9600
If the tournament requires good driving, you know that Keith Mitchell is going to make my playbook. I love the way this guy pounds the ball off the tee. I’ve spoken about the importance of driving at Quail Hollow and his track record is a prime example of that. Mitchell had back to back Top 10 finishes at the Wells Fargo in 2019 and 2021 but missed the cut last year at TPC Avenel. He’s made the cut in 9 of his last 10 starts with three Top 10 finishes. He currently ranks 1st in Total Driving, 6th in Off the Tee, 21st in Driving Accuracy, 25th in Putting Average, 30th in Tee to Green, and 35th in Birdie Average. I always love the upside he brings to the course week in and week out. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Hayden Buckley | 7400 | 8500
Buckley has back to back Top 10 finishes in solo stroke play events. He ranks 1st in Eagles, 4th in Off the Tee, 6th in Total Driving and 25th in Driving Accuracy on the PGA Tour. Hayden missed the cut at last year’s edition of the Wells Fargo but that was on a totally different course. Driving is at a premium this weekend which puts him at an advantage over a lot of this field. This 27-year-old has made major headway this season and why not jump on the bandwagon now before his price continues to climb. Game Type: GPP
G | Sam Ryder | 7200 | 8300 | ||
Ryder was a regular in the PGA Playbook earlier this season scoring a Top 5 at the Farmers, and back to back Top 20s in Phoenix and the Genesis. Torrey Pines is one of the larger courses on the PGA Tour schedule which is why I have confidence in him at Quail Hollow. Sam has never made the cut at this course but his form is much better than it was in previous years. He continues to be one of the best putters on tour ranking in the Top 3. Ryder ranks 16th in Birdie Average, 31st in Scoring Average, 42nd in Proximity, and 52nd in Scrambling. He can be trusted for salary relief in cash or tournaments. . Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Taylor Pendrith | 7000 | 8100
You talk about driving the golf ball and this talented Canadian is one of the best on the PGA Tour. While the stats don’t show it this season, we’ve seen him crush the ball off the tee on a week in and week out basis. He is coming off of a 30th place last weekend in Mexico, another course which rewards talent off the tee. While Taylor has never played this event, I have no doubt that his game will translate well to this course. Game Type: GPP
G | Will Gordon | 6900 | 8000 | ||
Once again I’ve loaded up my playbook with bombers for this course. He paid off for us last weekend finishing Top 25 in Mexico on another course that pays off big hitters. He’s 6th in Greens in Regulation, 13th in Total Driving, 20th in Driving Distance, 30th in Off the Tee, and 57th in Approach. While this field is better than last week, I believe he’ll make the cut and give you a chance to make some noise over the weekend. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Dylan Wu | 6700 | 7900 | ||
Dylan paid off for us last weekend scoring a Top 15 in Mexico. He continues a very solid sophomore campaign on the PGA Tour. He has made the cut in eight straight solo play events which includes a Top 10 and 2 Top 20 finishes. Wu is a talented ball striker and ranks Top 90 in Total, Tee to Green, Off the Tee, Approach, and Around the Green. I love this price tag on Dylan especially when you are trying to fit more of the top tier talent into your lineups. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Alejandro Tosti | 6500 | 7800
I introduced Tosti to you last week as a deep dive in Mexico and he paid us off with a Top 10 finish and earned a spot in this weekend’s Wells Fargo. The 26-year-old made the cut in his only PGA Tour appearance this season at the Sanderson Farms. Tosti has played terrific golf on the Korn Ferry Tour with two Top 10s and two Top 25s over his last four starts. On that tour, he ranks 2nd in All Around, 3rd in Total Birdies, 4th in Driving Distance, 10th in Par 5 Scoring, 15th in Scoring Average, 28th in Putting Average, and 34th in Greens in Regulation. I love him once again as a cheap option. Game Type: GPP |
