Mets recalled RHP Dedniel Núñez from Triple-A Syracuse.
The 28-year-old hurler joined the Mets’ bullpen prior to the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals. He had made 10 appearances at Syracuse prior to his promotion, registering a 3.48 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and a 13/7 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings.
Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after Sunday’s game that he expects Jesse Winker (oblique) to land on the injured list.
Winker suffered the injury to his side while making a throw to home plate in the fourth inning during the Mets’ first game against the Cardinals on Sunday. No word yet on the MRI results, but it sounds like the 31-year-old slugger is going to miss a couple of weeks at a minimum.
Alec Burleson launched his first home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs on Sunday night as the Cardinals triumphed over the Mets 5-4 in the second game of their doubleheader.
Burleson opened up the scoring in the ballgame with a 402-foot (105.3 mph EV) two-run shot off of Tylor Megill in the second inning. That would be his only hit in four at-bats on the night. On the season, the 26-year-old is now slashing .255/.305/.316 with the aforementioned one long ball and eight RBI.
Victor Scott II came through with a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning on Sunday as the Cardinals eked out a one-run victory over the Mets in the nightcap of their twin bill.
Scott broke a 4-4 deadlock with a two-out, RBI double into the gap in right-center off of Max Kranick, scoring Yohel Pozo who motored around from first base. The 24-year-old outfielder also walked and struck out twice in the ballgame, finishing the evening 1-for-3. Scott has exceeded expectations so far this season, slashing .286/.356/.419 with two homers, 15 RBI and 11 stolen bases through his first 31 games.
Michael McGreevy picked up a victory out of the Cardinals’ bullpen on Sunday night, allowing just one hit and one walk over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.
McGreevy struck out five batters during the impressive performance. He came on to put out a fire with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning and he responded by striking out Mark Vientos and getting Brandon Nimmo to line out to right to get out of it. He then went on to shut the Mets down over the next five innings to escape with a one-run victory. McGreevy got nine whiffs on 80 pitches in the game, posting a CSW of 29 percent. With the Cardinals utilizing a six-man rotation at the moment, it’s going to be difficult for them to justify keeping McGreevy out of there much longer. He’s worth a speculative look in deeper mixed leagues.
Andre Pallante was knocked around in a no-decision against the Mets on Sunday, giving up four runs on nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings of work.
The 26-year-old right-hander also issued four free passes on the night while recording just one strikeout. All of the damage done against him came in the third inning, as Pete Alonso, Starling Marte and Francisco Alvarez each delivered run-scoring singles. Pallante got three swings and misses on 72 pitches in the contest, posting a miserable CSW of only 14 percent. With Michael McGreevy beating down the door, Pallante could be in danger of losing his spot in the Cardinals’ rotation if he doesn’t turn things around soon. He’ll carry a 4.75 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and a 21/16 K/BB ratio (36 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Nationals in Washington.
