NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 4/9

We had some nice wins in Monday's NHL picks, so let's keep that going into today.

It's a smaller slate, but there are few good spots to target for NHL best bets today.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction: Wednesday, April 9th

The New York Rangers' season is all but over at this point, so let's look to the Philadelphia Flyers and some of their young players to have strong performances to begin our NHL best bets today.

The Flyers' season has been all over the place, but since the firing of head coach, John Tortorella, things are looking slightly up for them. Specifically, their young star, Matvei Michkov. I know it's only been four games since the head coaching change, but Michkov has 16 shots on goal and 7 points in that time.

As the future of their franchise, Michkov should look to play a primary offensive role to close out the season and the matchup against the Rangers is awesome. Over their last 10 games, the Rangers have allowed three goals or more eight times, making this a juicy matchup to attack.

With the Rangers continuing to shuffle their lineup, I'm not expecting any significant defensive effort, which should open up plenty of chances for Michkov.

Flames vs. Ducks Prediction: Wednesday, April 9th

Win and in? No. Win and get some help. That's where the Calgary Flames sit with five games to play. The Flames are four points behind the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference and they need to take care of business tonight versus the Anaheim Ducks

The Flames are four points back, but they also have a game in hand on the Minnesota Wild, so they need to pick up wins where they can get them. Luckily for them, this matchup against the Ducks is an easy one since they have allowed 3.33 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the sixth-worst in the league over the last two weeks.

As for the Flames, they aren't scoring a ton but they also aren't allowing a ton of goals. They've only allowed 2.36 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations over the last two weeks, which is 16th in the league. While only scoring 2.02 Goals, which is the eighth-lowest.

The Flames have been playing things close to the vest in recent outings and it looks like they are playing “playoff” style hockey. Fewer goals, fewer shots, in an attempt to eliminate high-variance games. The thinking for our NHL best bets today is that this should lead to a lower-scoring game as they try to come away with the win.
