NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/9
We have an awesome slate of games today with some top-tier talent and some heavyweights going head-to-head.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. New York Rangers Prediction: Sunday, March 9th
We have a big matchup between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers, as they are both in the mix for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Both teams are tied with 68 points and both are on two-game losing streaks, making this a rather important late-season game. I'm not expecting a ton of scoring in this game, so we want to start with under 6.5 in this matchup. Both teams aren't amazing on defense overall, but they've been playing better recently. Over the last two weeks, both teams have allowed 2.64 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations or better, which should set us up for a lower-scoring game.
While the goals might not be flying, there should be a solid amount of chances, especially on the Columbus side of things. Over the last two weeks, the Rangers have allowed 63.74 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the seventh-most in the league. They're allowing opponents to pile up the shots and that brings us to Zach Werenski.
He leads the team with 218 shots in 61 games this season or 3.5 per game. He's in the midst of a career season and getting pucks to the net should be the plan to help the Blue Jackets break this two-game losing streak.
- Expert Picks Blue Jackets vs. Rangers
- Zach Werenski Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-135 on FanDuel)
- Game Under 6.5 (-112 on FanDuel)
Seattle Kraken vs. Washington Capitals Prediction: Sunday, March 9th
After a very slow game against the Detroit Red Wings, I'm fully expecting Alex Ovechkin to get back on track. Ovi ended with just a single shot on goal against the Red Wings, which was absolutely stunning. He entered that game with at least three shots on goal in eight of his last nine games, which is an awesome level of consistency.
That string of success was partially broken against the Wings but there's no time like the present to move past that and do what he does best - pile up the shots. Over the last two week, the Capitals as a team have generated 61.33 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the 10th best in the league. They have the league's best offense and that starts with generating a ton of chances each and every game.
Despite that slow game, Ovi still has 42 shots on goal over his last 10 games, which is awesome. We all know he is chasing the goal record, but the only way to reach for that is to start with shots on goal. I expect the Capitals to keep it simple and let Ovi rip the puck today.
- Expert Picks Kraken vs. Capitals
- Alex Ovechkin Over 3.5 Shots on Goal (-130 on DraftKings)

- Wyatt Johnston Over 2.5 Shots (+116 on FanDuel)
Player News
Bills waived TE Armani Rogers.
This is unfortunate. Rogers recently ruptured his Achilles tendon for the second time in three years. He showed promise as a 2022 rookie, earning a 65.3 PFF receiving grade and a 68.0 PFF run-blocking grade, but the injuries are taking their toll. The Bills also released DT Branson Deen.
Jo Adell is not in the Angels’ starting lineup for Thursday evening’s battle against the Rangers in Arlington.
There have been no mentions of any physical issues that Adell is dealing with, so we’re assuming it’s just a regular day of rest for the 26-year-old slugger. Kyren Paris will move to center field to cover for him while Luis Rengifo slides over to second base and J.D. Davis will get an opportunity at the hot corner. For those tracking at home, that will be the fifth game in the outfield this season for Paris as he works towards eligibility there for fantasy purposes.
Christopher Morel is absent from the Rays’ starting lineup for Thursday’s tilt against the Yankees.
Morel had started each of the team’s previous 10 games, so it looks like they’re just trying to give him a breather. The 25-year-old slugger is slashing a healthy .288/.362/.404 with one homer, six RBI and a pair of stolen bases through his first 17 games on the season. Richie Palacios will start in his place in left field on Thursday night and will bat sixth against Will Warren and the Yankees.
Kyle Manzardo is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Thursday night’s showdown against the Orioles.
It appears to be just a routine day of rest for the 24-year-old slugger with right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano toeing the slab for the Orioles. Manzardo has slowed considerably after his strong start to the season as he’s slashing just .185/.313/.463 to go along with four homers and 11 RBI. Jose Ramirez will function as the Guardians’ designated hitter in his place on Thursday with Gabriel Arias sliding over to third base and Daniel Schneemann drawing a start at second base.
Trae Young (Achilles) is probable for Friday’s game against the Heat.
Even in the postseason, the Hawks continue to list Young as probable with an Achilles injury. The listing is performative, stemming from Young being held out of an NBA Cup game earlier this season despite not appearing on the injury report, which resulted in a $100K fine for the Hawks. With the Hawks’ season on the line Friday, expect Young to be cleared to play once again.
Tyler Soderstrom went 1-for-5 and blasted his league-leading ninth home run on Thursday as the Athletics clobbered the White Sox 8-0 in Chicago.
Soderstrom did his damage in the seventh inning of this one, launching a 3-2 slider from Brandon Eisert for a 374-foot (103.9 mph EV) solo shot that made it a 5-0 ballgame. It has taken the 23-year-old slugger just 19 games to match his home run output from the 2024 season where he swatted nine long balls in 213 plate appearances over 61 ballgames. He’s obviously not going to continue at this remarkable pace, but Soderstrom needs to be rostered and started in all fantasy leagues.
