Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report: February 15th

Published: Feb 15, 2021
Welcome to the fantasy hockey waiver wire report! As usual, every week, the weekly waiver wire report will help you target some players that you should be adding, or monitoring, on the waiver wire. You’ll want to check back through the week to see if players are added. The fantasy hockey season is a long one, but staying on top of the waiver wire will most certainly help keep your team competitive. Let’s see who we should be targeting this week.
Chandler Stephenson - Vegas Golden Knights - Center
Vegas centerman Chandler Stephenson has been red hot over the last five games-- scoring four goals and adding two assists-- and continues to skate on the top line with Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone. He only has 14 shots on goal this season, but he doesn’t need to shoot much considering he’s playing with the teams’ two best players. If you need some help down the middle, the Saskatoon native is worth considering.
Jeff Skinner - Buffalo Sabres - Winger
Imagine paying a player nine million per season for the foreseeable future, and he only has one assist on the season. Jeff Skinner has been a disappointment since arriving in Buffalo, but it looks like he might get the chance to play on the top line with Jack Eichel, and that can only make him better. He’s a risky add in any league, but COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the league, and Skinner can score goals, so if you have a spare roster spot, he might be worth adding. Can’t get any worse, right?
Mike Smith - Edmonton Oilers - Goalie
It’s 2021 and we are talking about Mike Smith being a good goalie in the NHL. It’s crazy, but we can’t ignore the fact that he’s given up just one goal in two games and has been rock solid for an Edmonton team that is desperate for goaltending. He won’t be this good all season, but if the Oilers can play better defence in front of him, maybe he can be serviceable in deeper formats? I don’t like having to think about adding the veteran goalie, but here we are. Fantasy owners who are desperate for help should look his way.
Pius Suter - Chicago Blackhawks - Center
We talked about Philipp Kurashev last week, but it looks like Pius Suter is getting another chance to center the top line with Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane. Both players are going to see opportunities on that top line, so we need to keep an eye on who’s getting that chance, and add them before our competition does. It’s not ideal, but it’s what we need to do to be better.
Nicolas Beaudin - Chicago Blackhawks - Defence
Back-to-back Chicago players to add off the waiver wire? That’s correct! Rookie Nicolas Beaudin has four points in eight games and is seeing time on the top power play unit. Volume in fantasy hockey is key, and the kid is getting his opportunity to showcase his skills. There’s no guarantee that he sticks on the top power play unit as the week moves on, but for now, he can’t hurt your fantasy team more than a player who isn’t doing anything. He’s 1% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s very much available if you decide to take a chance on him.
Devon Toews - Colorado Avalanche - Defence
With Cale Makar day-to-day due to an upper-body injury, Devon Toews is going to get a chance to play on the top power play unit, and that could translate into more points. We don’t know how long Makar will be out of the lineup, but in the short-term, Toews is worth a roster spot. In fact, you could hold onto him for the rest of the season. He is taking a decent amount of shots on goal (18) and is blocking a ton of shots (20). He might not be putting up monster numbers, but he’s serviceable in deeper formats.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
