The NHL season is in full swing and that means so is fantasy hockey! It’s a long grind to get to the playoffs, and an even tougher challenge to win it all. Like every year, injuries are going to happen to key players, which means we need to be active on the waiver wire. The waiver wire can help you win a championship, so it’s important to add the right players at the right time. Let’s take a look at which players are worth looking adding for the upcoming week.
Nolan Patrick - Philadelphia Flyers - Center
The former second overall pick in 2017 is getting a chance to showcase his skill on the top line. The 20-year-old is skating on a line with Travis Konecny and captain Claude Giroux. Patrick hasn’t found his offensive game in the NHL just yet, but if he can hold onto that top line role, his production should start to increase. He’s worth consideration deeper formats.
Ryan Donato - Minnesota Wild - Winger
After being traded from Boston to Minnesota, Ryan Donato is hoping he can find himself a regular spot in the top six. So far, that hasn’t been the case, but he is seeing top power play minutes, so there is upside to having Donato on your fantasy team. At one point, the Jordan Greenway experiment will come to an end, and Donato is the perfect candidate to take that spot. If you have a roster spot open, it’s worth taking a chance on Donato and Bruce Boudreau using him correctly.
Anthony Beauvillier - New York Islanders - Winger
The Islanders are actually a pretty good hockey team, but they continue to do stupid things, like play Andrew Ladd in the top six. It looks like Barry Trotz had a Snickers and has finally put Anthony Beauvillier back on the second line with Matthew Barzal and Josh Bailey. The 21-year-old is an effective player when he gets the opportunity to play with good plays. So far this season, the 28th overall pick in 2015 has 15 goals in 63 games. He can score goals at this level, but he needs a talented centerman to feed him the puck. Fantasy owners who are looking for some scoring depth should look to add Beauvillier now.
Alexander Edler - Vancouver Canucks - Defence
We keep talking about Edler because he continues to be under appreciated in fantasy hockey. The veteran defenceman has missed a ton of time this season due to different injuries, but when he’s healthy, he’s an asset. He’s 32% owned on ESPN, so you can probably find him on the waiver wire and get him for cheap. He’s back on the top power play unit and is playing over 22 minutes a night. He’s coming to the end of his contract this season, so Edler will probably want to finish the season strong, which is good news for fantasy owners.
Justin Schultz - Pittsburgh Penguins - Defence
Last week we talked about Marcus Pettersson being a good fantasy hockey pick up, but this week, it’s all about Justin Schultz. The 28-year-old has returned from injury and is seeing time on the top power play unit. As long as Letang is out of the lineup, Schultz should continue the majority of his power play time on the top unit, which is excellent news for fantasy owners considering how good that man advantage is. He’s only played 12 games this season, but he’s collected one goals and nine assists. If he can stay healthy for the remainder of the season, he can be a real asset for fantasy teams looking to make a playoff push.
Corey Crawford - Chicago Blackhawks - Goalie
It’s been a long road back for Corey Crawford, but the veteran goalie is healthy and ready to help the Blackhawks make a playoff push. There’s no question that Crawford is a huge upgrade from Cam Ward, and because the Hawks still have a chance to make the playoffs, the Quebec native is probably going to see a ton of hockey down the stretch. He’s 51% owned on ESPN, so he’s still very much available for a team that needs some goaltending help. If he can stay healthy, Crawford can be a real asset to any fantasy hockey team. If he’s still lying around on the waiver wire, add him before it’s too late.
Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
