2018 Fantasy Hockey Injury Report: November 6

Published: Nov 06, 2018
Welcome to the Fantasy Hockey Injury Report. Once a week, we’ll take a look at some injuries around the league that may affect your fantasy hockey team. Injuries will always happen and you can’t predict when, but it’s important to be ready for the aftermath and to have a plan ready. Let’s take a look and some players who are on the shelf for the upcoming week and beyond.
Brock Boeser - Vancouver Canucks - Winger
Injury: Groin, Day-to-day.
It’s so sad that this Canucks team can’t stay healthy. They are actually a pretty decent team, but they can’t keep bodies on the ice. Brock Boeser is once again dealing with a lower-body injury and right now, he’s considered day-to-day. Maybe he will play tonight (Tuesday) and everything will be fine, but players who aren’t 100% and continue to play is never a good thing. Boeser is a fantasy stud and owners just want to him to stay healthy. Let’s keep an eye on his status and hope it’s nothing too serious.
Ryan Getzlaf - Anaheim Ducks - Center
Injury: Upper-body injury, Day-to-day.
Being a Ryan Getzlaf owner must not be fun. It just seems like the Ducks captain can’t stay healthy anymore. Once again, Getzlaf is at risk of missing a game with an injury that doesn’t seem serious, but they are adding up. He’s already missed some time this season and it looks like he won’t be a go against Los Angeles. The Ducks are another team battling injuries, but even with their regulars in the lineup, they don’t look that great. It’s going to be hard to sell-low on Getzlaf at this point of the season, but if there’s an owner in your league that is willing to trade for him, find a way to get it done. He’s not getting any younger and he’s not the player he once was.
Alexander Radulov - Dallas Stars - Winger
Injury: Lower-body injury, Out indefinitely
Whatever is bothering Radulov is serious enough to keep him out of the lineup for more than just a week. He played last week against Montreal (of course he did), but wasn’t able to go the next game and hasn’t played since. He was coming off a lower-body injury, so it’s unclear if he re aggravated his previous injury, or if this is a new one. Regardless, it’s bad news. Radulov makes the Stars a much better team and he makes fantasy teams better too. It’s hard not knowing what’s going on, but fantasy owners will need to find a replace for this week, and probably next week too. Hopefully, he can play some hockey again sooner rather than later.
Brayden Schenn - St. Louis Blues - Center
Injury: Upper-body injury, Day-to-day.
Schenn left last game with an upper-body injury and did not return. His status for Tuesday is still up in the air, but we should get some information today. Mike Yeo called the injury "general soreness", but it seems to be more than just that. Should he miss some time, it would be a pretty big blow to the Blues and to fantasy owners. He’s played pretty well this season, scoring three goals and adding six assists in 12 games. He shouldn’t miss more than one game due to his injury, but that’s really a guess at this point.
Brian Elliott - Philadelphia Flyers - Goalie
Michal Neuvirth - Philadelphia Flyers - Goalie
Injury: Head injury, Day-to-day / Groin injury, Day-to-day
Here’s a nice two-for-one special. Both Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth are out with injuries, which is probably the worst-case scenario for any hockey team. Neuvirth was placed on IR, so it looks like he may be out longer than just day-to-day, but the team hasn’t provided any information on his status. As for Elliott, he hurt himself in practice on Sunday, so he could be ready to come back this week. For now, Calvin Pickard is (probably) going to get a chance to show the Flyers that he can play in the NHL. Alex Lyon was recalled from the AHL on Monday and will serve as the backup until one of Elliott/Neuvirth is ready to go.
Viktor Arvidsson - Nashville Predators - Winger
Injury: Lower-body injury, day-to-day.
This is more than just a day-to-day injury for Arvidsson, but as of right now, no one has updated his status. He was placed on IR Monday afternoon, but he hasn’t be ruled out for Wednesday’s game against the Avalanche. There’s a strong chance that he doesn’t play that game, so it might be time to start looking for a replacement. Kevin Fiala was seen practicing on the top power play unit in Arvidsson’s spot, so if you need a replacement while he’s out, Fiala works just find. Let’s hope that Arvidsson’s injury isn’t a serious one and that he doesn’t miss multiple weeks.
Player News
Jose Altuve (hamstring) is back in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Royals.
Altuve returns to Houston’s lineup at second base and batting second on Monday evening against Kansas City following a one-game absence due to right hamstring tightness. The 35-year-old veteran fantasy stalwart is getting more brittle as he ages, but he’s managed to avoid the injured list this season while transitioning to a brand-new multi-position role. Fantasy managers can confidently lock him into weekly lineups.
Spencer Strider (hamstring) will face hitters on Wednesday in a simulated game.
Strider will be re-evaluated following Wednesday’s throwing session before Atlanta determines whether he’ll rejoin the rotation this week or make another minor league rehab start. It’s a frustrating situation for fantasy managers. There’s a chance Strider is cleared to take the ball this weekend for Atlanta, but there will likely be some workload restrictions from a pitch count standpoint, which makes him a risky option in weekly leagues ahead of Monday’s lineup lock.
Ronald Acuña Jr. (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Here we go. Acuña is going to require at least a couple weeks of minor-league rehab games before he’s ready to make his highly-anticipated season debut. The 27-year-old fantasy superstar remains without a definitive return timetable, but appears on track to return to Atlanta before the end of May or at some point in early June. He’ll get a couple games under his belt in Florida before facing some higher level competition in the minors.
Dodgers acquired OF Steward Berroa from the Blue Jays for cash considerations.
Berroa heads to Los Angeles as extra organizational outfield depth. The 25-year-old hit .189 with six steals in 28 games last year for the Blue Jays in his first shot at the highest level. He’s extremely unlikely to make a fantasy impact for the Dodgers given their overabundance of talent in the majors.
Blue Jays sent RHP Dillon Tate outright to Triple-A Buffalo.
Tate went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday and will remain with the organization as extra relief depth. The 31-year-old righty has made five relief appearances this season at the highest level.
Corey Seager (hamstring) remains absent from the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Rockies.
Seager will sit out for the fourth time in the last five games as he continues to deal with an ongoing right hamstring soreness. The 31-year-old fantasy superstar is expected to be re-evaluated prior to Monday’s contest to determine whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list. It’ll be Ezequiel Duran filling in at shortstop once again in his absence.
