Jimmy Garoppolo & 49ers Agree to Restructured Contract
Well, well, well. This is a very interesting development in the whole Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumor saga. The San Francisco 49ers and Garoppolo have agreed to a reworked one-year contract to keep the quarterback on the team at a cheaper price tag, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The new deal will reportedly include a lowered base salary of $6.5 million fully guaranteed with a chance at $10 million in incentives if Garoppolo ends up playing and/or starting games this season. The contract also includes no-tag and no-trade clauses for Garoppolo to have more control, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Still, San Fran saves a ton of money since he was originally owed $24.2 million guaranteed this year. After months of speculation that the 49ers would either trade or release Jimmy G, it appears they are keeping him in town to be Trey Lance’s backup. Although we’d like to say Lance is still the clear-cut starter, and he may be for Week 1, this doesn’t exactly instill a ton of confidence if the 49ers are choosing to keep Garoppolo around – at least for now. Of course, San Francisco could still end up trading Jimmy G if the right team and price come along.
Dolphins Release RB Sony Michel
Every year we have notable NFL roster cuts that have us raising our collective eyebrows. Maybe people expected the Miami Dolphins to part ways with Sony Michel, but it’s still worth noting because of his name recognition and potential fantasy impact. Michel’s departure from Miami means that Raheem Mostert has a firmer grasp on the early-down touches in the Dolphins offense while Chase Edmonds remains the change-of-pace back. It also means that Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin have a better chance at earning roster spots as backup RBs in Miami. Meanwhile, Michel will likely be picked up soon by a team looking for backfield depth. Don’t be surprised if he’s more valuable for fantasy on his new team if it’s somewhere without a clear starter. Our own Kevin Tompkins has an interesting suggestion, especially following the unfortunate Brian Robinson Jr. situation.
Brian Robinson Jr. Released From Hospital
All things considered, it's great news to hear that Brian Robinson Jr. was released from the hospital on Monday just a day after being shot twice in an armed robbery attempt in Washington D.C. The Washington Commanders running back underwent surgery and it “went well,” according to his own Instagram story post below. Thankfully, all reports have been positive from Robinson Jr. himself and from the team. Thinking about fantasy football in this situation should be an afterthought, but it's something we have to plan for in drafts or if you roster the Commanders' RB. ESPN's John Keim reports that Robinson Jr. will meet with team doctors on Tuesday to determine a rehabilitation plan. Keim notes that the Washington back could miss the first four games if he's placed on the non-football injury list. On Monday, head coach Rob Rivera said that doctors were optimistic about Robinson Jr.'s recovery and return this season. The fact that Robinson Jr. will be able to play football at all this season is a positive, so only four games missed would be fantastic for both real life and fantasy.
Jaguars Trade WR Laviska Shenault to Panthers
NFL trade alert! On Monday, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded away wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. to the Carolina Panthers. This move definitely has some fantasy football ramifications moving forward. Once he learns the Panthers playbook and builds a rapport with QB Baker Mayfield, there’s a decent chance Shenault emerges as the third or fourth-best fantasy skill player in the Carolina offense behind Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, and maybe Robbie Anderson. As for the Jaguars, this locks in more targets and larger snap shares for Marvin Jones, Christian Kirk, and Zay Jones as the starting wideouts.
Will Dameon Pierce Be Texans’ Starting RB?
This is the question everyone has been wondering ever since the Houston Texans drafted Dameon Pierce in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Impressive preseason and training camp performances have put the rookie in prime position to be the team’s lead back for Week 1 and beyond. However, Texans head coach Lovie Smith still wouldn’t commit to Pierce as the starting RB when asked about it on Monday. Maybe it’s gamesmanship to prevent the Colts from getting any leg up for that Week 1 matchup. Maybe it’s to show respect to Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead as they both battle for touches with Pierce in that Houston backfield. Or maybe Lovie Smith still doesn’t realize that Pierce is his best running back. Either way, the cream always rises to the top and we should see the rookie RB eventually be the Texans’ starter – whether it comes in Week 1 or not.
