Sal Frelick (knee) is absent from the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Astros.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters MRI results on Frelick’s left knee were encouraging and that he expects him to avoid a trip to the injured list. It sounds like there’s a chance the versatile 25-year-old returns to Milwaukee’s lineup at some point later this week. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Monday that MacKenzie Gore is dealing with ankle soreness.
Martinez added that Gore is feeling much better after battling through muddy field conditions on Sunday afternoon against the Reds at a rain-soaked Great American Ball Park. It didn’t impact his performance as he recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just one run over five innings of work. He slipped at one point while delivering a fifth-inning pitch, but it doesn’t sound like he’s in jeopardy of missing his next start on Saturday against the Cardinals.
Ravens released K Justin Tucker.
The writing was on the wall after the draft, where Baltimore drafted rookie kicker Tyler Loop as Tucker’s replacement. Tucker has spent most of the late season and offseason dealing with sexual misconduct allegations from massage therapists in Baltimore-area spas, and had by far the worst season of his career in 2024, making 73.3 percent of his 30 field-goal attempts. The Ravens stood by him throughout the process and framed moving on from him as a “football decision” in a statement, but it’s hard to believe they would have moved on from him if not for the allegations. Tucker will likely have to clear his name, as Brandon McManus did this past offseason, before he gets another NFL chance. The NFL’s investigation into Tucker’s behavior is, per CBS’ Jonathan Jones, still “under review.”
Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Austin Hays (hamstring) could return for Friday’s series opener against the Astros.
Hays hit the injured list last Friday with a mild left hamstring strain. It sounds like there’s a decent chance he’s back with Cincinnati later this week without needing a minor league rehab assignment. The 29-year-old outfielder has gotten off to a torrid start in his Reds debut, hitting .365/.431/.712 with five homers, 13 RBI and one steal through 13 games.
Cardinals signed TE Josiah Deguara, formerly of the Jaguars.
Deguara was a third-round pick of the Packers back in 2020 and spent last season with the Jaguars. The veteran tight end has a career receiving line of 50-450-2, with half of his receptions and receiving yards coming during the 2021 campaign. He appeared in three games as a backup last season and shouldn’t be considered a lock to make the 53-man roster.
Spencer Strider (hamstring) has been cleared to begin long tossing.
Braves manager Brian Snitker said Monday that Strider is progressing well in his recovery from a Grade 1 hamstring strain that put him on the shelf back on April 21. It’s unclear when he’ll resume throwing bullpen sessions again, which makes it challenging to forecast his potential return timeline. He’s still several weeks away from making it back to Atlanta, even if he makes rapid progress.
