Orioles top prospect Samuel Basallo has been diagnosed with a mild left hamstring strain.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias told reporters Tuesday that Basallo could return at DH in a couple weeks and resume catching at some point in May. The 20-year-old slugging backstop figures to reach the big leagues later this year and is one of the premier fantasy-relevant prospects worth keeping a close eye on.
Steven Kwan had a two-run homer, an RBI single and a walk as the Guardians topped the Orioles 6-3 on Tuesday.
That’s already three homers in 16 games for Kwan. He averages one every 17 games over the course of his career. His exit velocities aren’t really up at all, so the homers probably won’t keep coming like this. He has a better chance of batting .300 for the first time; he’s at .333 right now.
Logan Allen shut out the Orioles for 5 2/3 innings to pick up his first win Tuesday.
He struck out six and allowed just two hits. It’s Allen’s first win since last June 20, when he improved to 8-3 in spite of a 5.23 ERA. He went on to spend most of the rest of the year in the minors, and he was expected to open up back in Triple-A this season before others faltered this spring. He has a 2.30 ERA through three starts this season, but his 11/9 K/BB in 15 2/3 innings is less impressive. He’s still not recommended in mixed leagues, though this Sunday’s start in Pittsburgh is tempting.
Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless ninth in a three-run game for his second save Tuesday against the Orioles.
Clase has struggled, but it’s also the case that save chances have been few and far between for the Guardians. This is just his third opportunity. He blew the first one on Opening Day, but he wound up with a win in that game anyway. In spite of his early struggles, he hasn’t cost the Guardians a game yet.
Charlie Morton dropped to 0-4 after giving up five runs in five-plus innings Tuesday against the Guardians.
He struck out two and walked three. Nevertheless, he limited the Guardians to one run through four before giving up three runs in the fifth. He was brought back out for the sixth anyway, gave up a leadoff single to Gabriel Arias and was immediately pulled. Arias later came around to score off Cionel Pérez. Morton figures to stay in the rotation in spite of his 8.84 ERA and face the Reds next.
Cedric Mullins went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk against the Guardians on Tuesday.
The Orioles could have sat Mullins against the lefty tonight — they did sit their other platoon guys — but he’s simply been too good. The homer came off left-handed reliever Joey Cantillo. It was just his second in 111 plate appearances against southpaws since the beginning of last year.
