Injuries change everything in fantasy sports. When a player on your team gets hurt, you have two options: 1) Sulk 2) Take immediate action. If you wait even a couple hours longer, someone else will take advantage of your opportunity and snatch the player who serves as the injury beneficiary of all of the playing time. Take action! Look at the depth charts. Be a Coach! Fill that void in your lineup!
T.J. McConnell PG PHI-26% Ownership: While we all trust in the 76ers “Process” at Center, their Guards are a different story. Since Jerryd Bayless got hurt, it has been a never-ending race for playing time between McConnell and Sergio Rodriguez. Even with McConnell banged up, it seems that he is still ahead in that race and because of that he gets more opportunities to produce. McConnell is one of those rare guards that does not focus on scoring, but helps out with other categories. McConnell has dished at least six assists in each game he’s played in January.
Kelly Olynyk C BOS-29% Ownership: Being that Olynyk is most effective from the perimeter, he will have games in which his main responsibilities center around ball movement. It also does not help that Al Horford is also very effective from the perimeter. Olynyk has been helping out in other areas beyond scoring. His ball movement and ability to hit the cutter inside have helped him compile assists. Olynyk has also grabbed at least six rebounds in three of his last four games. With Olynyk seeing minutes in the 20’s and even in the 30’s every few games, he is a safe pick up as the last Center off of your bench.
Michael Beasley F MIL-8% Ownership: We all know about the “Greek Freak” and Jabari Parker, but who else can the Bucks rely on? Beasley is campaigning for that third option spot lately as he has scored in double figures in four of his last five games. Beasley has also contributed in the other standard categories. Beasley has grabbed at least six rebounds in three of his last four games. His paint approach has been better as he is always fighting for position down low and has been successful driving. Beasley is also a minor three-point threat. The Bucks depth has not been impressive and if Beasley can keep it going, he should see more games playing in the 30’s.
Raymond Felton G LAC-37% Ownership: I promise; I’m not trying to steer you wrong. I am not a fan of Felton’s game compared to the other Clippers Guards, but as stated before, when injuries happen (especially to major impact players) someone has to fill the void and Felton has been making his case to get a good chunk of minutes. He has scored in double figures in his last three games and he has been showing that he can handle some of the playmaking responsibilities. Felton has a total of 18 assists in his last 3 games. Felton has been a minor rebounding help during these last few games and I am a sucker for Guards for rebound. Felton can certainly see consistency playing in the late 20’s-early 30’s for minutes.
Iman Shumpert SG/SF CLE-9% Ownership: Shumpert keeps his spot in the Cavs rotation because of his ability to read through screens and keep the perimeter on lock down, but lately, it has been his offense that has stood out. He has scored in double figures in his last three games and even grabbed nine rebounds in one of those games. Shumpert will also provide consistency in the steals category as he has swiped the ball six times in his last three games. Shumpert is a three-point shooting threat and does not take unnecessary shots. He is a good short-term pick up until his scoring once again drops.
Garrett Temple G SAC-20% Ownership: With Rudy Gay (Achilles) hurt, Temple should see a lot more run going forward. Expect a major bump in playing time and shot opportunities. The Kings do not have a lot of depth and we have seen Temple play into the 40’s recently. Expect him to post consistent double-figure scoring outings and to be a rebound, assist and steals help as well. Temple has grabbed eight rebounds total in his last two games. Being that he can rotate to multiple positions, it will only give him more of a chance to produce and he can shoot from the outside. Outside shooting will be needed because it was one of Gat’s specialties.
Dion Waiters SG/SF MIA-26% Ownership: Waiters is healthy and once again hot. He’s one of those players that misses the easy shots and makes the hard ones meaning that he has even more scoring potential. Waiters has played over 30 minutes in 3 of his last 4 games. Waiters has not only been starting, but he has also been on a three-game double digit scoring streak. With Josh Richardson hurt, Waiters will continue to get a ton of playing time and he will also be a minor steals and assists help as he is averaging 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season. Waiters is also a long-range shooting threat and balances his approach nicely between driving and shooting.
Seth Curry G DAL-31% Ownership: Curry has been on the list before and with Mavs mid and front court not as productive offensively, they continue to rely heavily on their guards and Curry, Deron Williams and J.J. Barea all get sufficient time. Curry has scored in double figures in three of his last four games and gets a lot of time with the ball. Curry is very effective off the ball. On the ball, he has grabbed at least four rebounds in three of his last four games and will provide minor assist help. Pick him up for the short term if you need a scoring boost.
David Lee PF/C SAS-15% Ownership: After posting a double-double in his last game and the Hand injury to Pau Gasol, David Lee will get more playing time and he does not need a lot of time to compile rebounds and cheap points. Expect LaMarcus Aldridge to get a ton of attention from defenders meaning the other side of the paint will be open. Lee is also good at running the floor. He should be a lot more productive regarding he plays 25-30 minutes with Pau Gasol out.
Dewayne Dedmon C SAS-3% Ownership: Dedmon is the other option who will fill the void while Gasol recovers and while Lee is a great floor runner, he helps mostly on offense. Dedmon does a bit more of the enforcer work on defense and the Spurs will rely on him for those enforcer skills. Dedmon does not need a ton of time to produce and recently posted a 12-rebound game. Like Lee, he does not need a ton of time to produce and it will be interesting to see the balance between Dedmon and Lee when it comes to playing time for the foreseeable future.
