Gameplay Predictions

New York Yankees

  • Sabathia made his last start 12 days ago and the injury he was suffering from was a knee, so he shouldn’t be hindered by that at all here.

  • Over his last two starts, Sabathia has thrown 11.2 innings while striking out 19 and allowing just one earned run.

  • In two starts versus Baltimore, Sabathia is 0-1 with an 8.00 ERA. He’s allowed eight earned runs over nine innings while allowing three home runs.

  • Giancarlo Stanton is riding an eight-game hit streak with seven extra-base hits and five runs batted in.

  • Brett Gardner is 9-for-28 off of Alex Cobb in his career.

  • Gardner and Gleyber Torres are the only active Yankees to have homered off of Cobb in the past.

  • Miguel Andujar has eight extra-base hits and 12 runs batted in over his last 10 games.

  • Neil Walker has a mini four-game hit streak currently and has six runs batted in over that span.

Baltimore Orioles

  • Alex Cobb is coming off his best start of the year throwing a complete game while allowing two earned runs.

  • Cobb has allowed three earned runs or less in six consecutive starts and only once over that span has he gone over two.

  • Cobb won his only start against the Yankees this season throwing six innings of one run ball.

  • Adam Jones is 24-for-92 with five home runs off of CC Sabathia during their careers.

  • Jones is hitting .288 versus left-handed pitching which leads the team. The next highest average against left-handed bats is .247 and it belongs to Craig Gentry .

  • There are only two teams with a worse batting average than the Orioles since the All-Star break against left-handed pitching.

  • Weirdly enough, the Orioles two catchers lead the team in batting average this year at home; Caleb Joseph (.289) and Austin Wynns (.321).

Pregame Props

1. Both teams record a hit in the 1st Inning

Both pitchers come into this game hot and neither offense have been very good of late either. I’m going with NO here because of those two facts.

2. Both teams combine for 2 or more strikeouts in the 1st inning

Neither Cobb or Sabathia are big strikeout pitchers as both have struck out less than a player per inning. That said, all we’re asking for is one from both and both teams are swing and miss teams. I’m going YES here.

3. A NYY batter reaches a full count

Cobb has walked five batters over his last three games and the Yankees and known for working counts. I think it’s a YES for this one.

4. NYY leadoff batter sees 4 or more pitches

Brett Gardner tends to be a very patient lead off bat, so if he’s in the top spot we should go with YES here. If it’s Aaron Hicks , Hicks is more aggressive and COULD swing and make contact with the first pitch he sees.
