Underdog Fantasy MLB Picks - Best Picks & Plays for July 9: Back To The Well With Austin Riley

Happy Saturday, July 9th, everyone. We have a ton of afternoon baseball that we’re talking a look at MLB DFS plays for. Some of our favorite plays of the day are in fantastic spots, just as match-ups against Patrick Corbin and Jonathan Heasley. We have elite bats such as Mike Trout, José Ramírez, and Austin Riley in spots we should look to attack and use their props in. Check back with our MLB Weather Center for more details surrounding the latest MLB weather report as MLB daily fantasy lineup lock approaches. To get all the confirmed lineups across baseball, check out the MLB Lineups page as well. To get projections and generate one or multiple daily fantasy baseball lineups, take a look at our MLB daily projections and MLB DFS Lineup Generator. Now let’s dive into the top MLB daily picks and MLB player props for Underdog Fantasy tonight!
Austin Riley OVER 1.5 total bases
I’ve loved using Austin Riley against left-handed pitching this year as he’s been fantastic since the beginning of the campaign. In 93 at-bats, he’s hitting .293 with six home runs and a .434 wOBA. 16 of his 24 hits have been for extra bases, which is a big reason he has a .354 ISO and .434 wOBA. Riley’s also hitting .436 with seven multi-hit games over his last nine contests.
Patrick Corbin is on the mound for the Nationals and I’m not sure we need to say much more. Corbin has been dreadful this year pitching to a 5.68 ERA on the year. Right-handed hitters have a .305 AVG, .850 OPS, and a .367 wOBA against Corbin this year. You could make a case for pretty much every Braves player here.
Patrick Sandoval OVER 5.5 strikeouts
Although the Orioles have a bunch of guys that have had a long history of success against left-handed pitching, 2022 has not been a season they’ve been great against them. In fact, they’re 24th in OPS and wOBA against southpaws. Not to mention they have a 25.4% K-rate, which is the fourth-highest in the league.
Sandoval has been a strikeout machine lately, notching six or more punchouts in three of his last four games including nine in his last outing. Sandoval has a 23.8% K-rate this year, and had a 25.9% K-rate last year too. There is a LOT of upside here and Sandoval could have his best strikeout performance of the year here.
Other play(s) I like:
- Wander Franco OVER 1.5 total bases
- José Ramírez OVER 1.5 total bases

Player News
670 The Score’s Bruce Levine reports the Cubs are calling up top prospect Moises Ballesteros on Tuesday.
Levine adds that Ian Happ, who has missed three straight games with an oblique injury, is headed to the injured list as the corresponding move. The 21-year-old backstop has put up impressive numbers this season for Triple-A Iowa, batting .368/.420/.522 with four homers and three steals as one of the youngest hitters in the Pacific Coast League. He could make an impact for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues, especially if he’s playing regularly at DH, which makes him worthy of a speculative pickup. The biggest development for fantasy purposes here is that emerging star Pete Crow-Armstrong will continue leading off for at least a couple extra games until Happ returns.
Jhony Brito underwent UCL surgery with an internal brace procedure last month.
Brito will miss the remainder of the season and most likely a significant portion of next season as well. The 27-year-old righty made a career-high 26 relief appearances last year for San Diego.
Jonathan India picked up two RBI on three hits in a win Monday over the Astros.
Bobby Witt Jr. tripled and drove in two runs while helping the Royals to a 7-5 win over the Astros on Wednesday.
Carlos Estévez worked a scoreless ninth to procure a save against the Astros on Monday.
Michael Wacha allowed eight hits, but gave up just two runs over 6 1/3 innings in a win over the Astros on Monday.
