Nationals recalled 3B Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester.
With Paul DeJong (broken nose) landing on the IL, Lipscomb will be called up to take his place. The 24-year-old is hitting .295/.392/.386 in 13 games at Triple-A with one home run, seven RBI, and two steals. He’s also striking out a career-high 25.5 percent of the time. It will either be him or Amed Rosario getting regular starts with DeJong out.
Nationals placed INF Paul DeJong on the 10-day injured list with a fractured nose.
DeJong was hit in the face by a pitch on Tuesday night and will now be shut down for a while. Amed Rosario took his place in the lineup on Tuesday and started at third base on Saturday and Sunday, so he could get the first look to replace DeJong. However, the team recalled Trey Lipscomb on Wednesday, so it remains to be seen what direction they go in.
Max Scherzer (thumb) threw on Tuesday and Wednesday in advance of seeing a doctor.
Scherzer is seeing a different hand specialist today than the one he saw last time. We’ll see how his thumb responds to throwing two days in a row and what this new doctor says before we know what kind of timeline is reasonable for the 40-year-old’s return.
Jeff McNeil (oblique) is starting in center field for Low-A St. Lucie on Wednesday.
The Mets want to have the option while Jose Siri is out, but it’s hard to see McNeil, who graded out as an average corner outfielder last year, being a good fit in center field, especially next to Juan Soto, who is limited defensively. The most likely outcome is that the Mets need to get McNeil at-bats at second base at the expense of Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna.
Pablo Lòpez (hamstring) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday.
The bullpen session went well, and Lòpez said he felt good afterwards. The Twins will now wait to see how his hamstring responds tomorrow before deciding the next course of action. If he’s cleared to return, he could move right back into the rotation or make one rehab start, which means the window for David Festa or Zebby Matthews to get into the Twins rotation could be closing.
White Sox OF prospect Braden Montgomery went 2-for-2 with a walk, a home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored for Single-A Kannapolis on Tuesday.
One of the centerpieces of the Garrett Crochet trade with Boston, Montgomery is off to a great start to his White Sox career, hitting .353/.415/.618 in nine games with two home runs, 13 RBI, and three steals. He was one of the more advanced hitters in the 2024 draft and could be a quick riser through the White Sox system.
