This is my favorite Friday Waiver Report to date. There has been some significant news during the week, leading to intriguing adds not only for deep leagues but shallow ones as well. There could be opportunities to grab players now who could be hot waiver pickups next week, which is always a good way to gain an advantage on the rest of your league. The players below are in no particular order, though they are listed along with their ownership percentage in Yahoo! leagues.
Vernon Davis, TE, WAS (13%) – I am kind of surprised Davis’s ownership remains so low after Jordan Reed missed Sunday night’s game. Washington plays Monday night, so Reed’s owners would do well to add Davis just in case Reed cannot go. Davis caught five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown last week, and I would much rather wait on Reed and hope Davis has another good game if Reed sits rather than plugging in another option on Sunday.
Bilal Powell, RB, NYJ (68%) – I have never believed in Powell’s talent as much as other people, but he averaged 138 scrimmage yards over the last four games of 2016, including the last two with Matt Forte out. Forte didn’t practice Thursday, and if his toe injury keeps him out, Powell is a worthy flex in 10-team leagues.
Los Angeles Rams DEF (54%) – The Rams have been dropped in a number of leagues, likely as a result of allowing 39 points to the 49ers Thursday night as well as facing the Cowboys Week 4. Starting in Week 5, the Rams play the Seahawks, Jaguars, Cardinals, Giants and Texans. They will be playable in every one of those matchups, and if you have an extra roster spot, it may be prudent to add them now and stash them on your bench for a week rather than trying to add them next week.
John Brown, WR, ARI (39%) – Brown put in a practice Thursday—albeit in limited capacity—for the first time in two weeks. Even if he doesn’t play Sunday against the 49ers, he appears likely to return in Week 5. Brown had nine targets in Week 1 and he has demonstrated big play ability in the past. He can make your week when he is healthy.
Nick Boyle, TE, BAL (0%) – Neither Benjamin Watson nor Maxx Williams have practiced yet this week. Nick Boyle could have the tight end job to himself Week 4, and that could be extremely valuable. Dennis Pitta led all tight ends in receptions last season, and Watson ranks 13th in fantasy points among tight ends through three games. Boyle made my preseason list of dark horse tight ends to keep an eye on, and I believe he is talented enough to take advantage if given an opportunity.
Thomas Rawls, RB, SEA (31%) – C.J. Prosise is not expected to play Sunday night, which could lead to increased opportunities for Rawls or even Eddie Lacy (17%). Rawls probably isn’t startable this week outside of super deep leagues, but if he outplays Chris Carson on Sunday night, he could be on the good end of a running back platoon as soon as Week 5. He is worth a speculative add to find out.
Paul Perkins, RB, NYG (43%) and Wayne Gallman, RB, NYG (1%) – Both Shane Vereen and Orleans Darkwa have missed multiple practices this week, and if they are inactive, Perkins and Gallman would likely split the running back touches for New York. Perkins would see a slight bump in his value, but Gallman could be a really sneaky play in deep leagues. With as bad as the Giants running backs have looked this season, Gallman could earn more playing time going forward if he shows anything on Sunday.
Juju Smith-Schuster, WR, PIT (1%) and Eli Rogers, WR, PIT (1%) – Martavis Bryant is expected to play Sunday, but he hasn’t practiced yet this week due to an illness. If he is out, Smith-Schuster would have intriguing upside, though Eli Rogers would likely be involved as well.
