The spectacle that is the Singapore Grand Prix night race is upon us. After a few weeks off since wrapping up the European part of the schedule, it’s time for the sprint to the finish of the 2022 F1 season. There are six races left and nine Sundays to race them in. In terms of F1, that’s a sprint as the globe-trotting continues. The only true night race on the calendar. It’s sure to be a barnburner of a race.

 

Top F1 DFS Captain Plays

We need these drivers to be dominant to have the best chance of posting a big score and finishing near the top of the contests. If all hell breaks loose, we can get away with a cheaper one, but the hasn’t happened often. The drivers listed as captains can also be played as drivers just fine.

Max Verstappen, P8 - $18,600

The only reason Max isn’t on the pole for this race is because he was running out of fuel on the last flying lap in Q3. He’ll start P8 instead. This will only make him more popular. Not only do we get the fastest guy on track starting seven spots behind where he should be, we still have a shot for him to lead laps pretty quickly in the race. He will be the most popular captain pick and the most popular driver played once again.

Charles Leclerc, P1 - $16,800

Is this finally when we see Leclerc get a win from pole again this season? The last time he pulled that off was Australia. Since then a variety of things have transpired to keep him from the top of the podium after claiming poles. The good news here is that it’s tough to pass as the pole-sitter has won the vast majority of the 12 races in Singapore. If Ferrari can keep the strategy issues at bay, haha it’s the Marina Bay circuit, for a race, we could see Leclerc keep Verstappen from clinching the World Championship for another race. That’s a big IF though.

Lewis Hamilton, P3 - $15,000

While Mercedes have been pretty public about their views that they’re already on to next year’s car and don’t think they can win with this car, Hamilton keeps locking down top-3s. He’ll be starting P3 this weekend. Third isn’t terrible though given the top-3 were separated by 0.054 seconds and rain is expected again on Sunday. If Hamilton can get a great jump on the start, he could be in line to lead some laps as he outpaced both Verstappen and Leclerc in FP1 and has been right with them much of the weekend. There’s also the fact that he’s likely to beat his teammate, George Russell, given how tricky passing is at this circuit.

Fernando Alonso, P5 - $10,500

It was a rough qualifying for his teammate in Esteban Ocon. That gives Alonso the positional advantage he needs for bonus points. There’s also the fact that Alonso was a lot faster in the rain-hit FP3 than he’d been in the dry FP1 and FP2 sessions. If the rain does hit on Sunday like it’s forecast to, we could see Alonso nab a very good finish, defeated teammate bonus points, and a very good points day for us in DFS.

 

Top Driver Plays

George Russell, P11 - $9.600

If you read the Hamilton write-up, why is Russell here? Well, we can still get good points from him based on the practice speeds and his propensity for finishing in the top-five. Starting P11 isn’t where he should be rolling off from. He was faster than that. So for DFS, we’re banking on him moving up several spots, even though it’s tough to pass here, and finishing P5-P6. While he likely doesn’t finish ahead of Hamilton, that’s still worth in the 14 point-range.

Sergio Perez, P2 - $8,800

This is a bit of a hail mary play. He’s starting second and if he can beat Leclerc off the line he can lead laps until his teammate takes over the lead. If he doesn’t lead laps and gets passed by Verstappen, there’s not a ton of value here aside from the finish position points he’ll get. That might be enough at this price but it would be nice if the Scuderia in front of him could finish behind him to get a boost in finishing position points.

Esteban Ocon, P18 - $6,400

He’s simply starting too far back. He was way faster than that at practice and caught a bad break with traffic in qualifying. He should be able to move up several spots given the speed in the car. This is a tough track to pass at, but Ocon has made a career out of passing in tough situations like this one. He’ll likely be a popular play at this price and for the points upside from moving up. The downside here is that he’s unlikely to beat Alonso which will cost him some points upside.

Lance Stroll, P12 - $4,800

Stroll has been quick this weekend, even quicker in the wet conditions of FP3. He’ll be starting P12 with the shot to move up a few spots and finish inside the top-10 where he’s run all weekend. If the rain does come on Sunday, we’ll likely get even better chances for Stroll to move up and out-duel his teammate, Sebastian Vettel.

Alex Albon, P19 - $4,400

His teammate is Nicholas Latifi. Enough said. He’s run faster than this starting spot all weekend and should have no trouble finishing ahead of Latifi, yet again, not to mention that Albon has been a few spots better than this qualifying spot in practice as well. He’ll be a popular play this cheap and this far back, yet still ahead of his teammate.

Kevin Magnussen, P9 - $3,200

It’s been a rough year for K-Mags. This could be a bright spot for him though. Starting inside the top-10 at a track he’s done solidly at in the past is good news. He’s also shown speed at practice that’s similar to his starting spot. If he can hold this starting spot, and potentially beat his teammate, Mick Schumacher, there is major value here at this price tag.
