Mariners designated RHP Luis F. Castillo for assignment.
The other Luis Castillo had a 7.71 ERA and a 5/7 K/BB over seven innings in two starts for the Mariners last month. He wasn’t great in Triple-A, either, so there’s a good chance he’ll clear waivers.
Rangers recalled OF Evan Carter from Triple-A Round Rock.
We’re curious how this will work out, since the Rangers are going to keep using Josh Smith regularly but they also wouldn’t have recalled Carter without planning to use him frequently. The 22-year-old Carter had shaken off a slow start in Triple-A to hit .221/.333/.416 with three homers and six steals through 21 games. In large part because he’s back running again, he’ll be worth a try in mixed leagues if he becomes the starting center fielder.
Mariners claimed OF Leody Taveras off waivers from the Rangers.
The Mets seemed like maybe the best fit for Taveras among contenders, but he didn’t last that long on waivers. The Mariners definitely need the outfield depth with Victor Robles and Luke Raley on the IL. It’ll be quite a change for Taveras, who has never played the outfield corners as a major leaguer. He does have some minor league experience away from center, though. The 26-year-old has hit .240/.291/.370 in 1,825 plate appearances over six big-league seasons. Expect him to start against most righties for now. It’s unlikely that he’ll offer value outside of AL-only leagues. Rhylan Thomas will probably be optioned out once Taveras reports.
Royce Lewis is DHing and batting fifth in his 2025 debut Tuesday against the Orioles.
The Twins have Brooks Lee at second and Jonah Bride at third with Willi Castro in the outfield and Trevor Larnach on the bench against a lefty tonight. Lee figures to remain in the lineup most of the time with Lewis back. Bride should only start against lefties. Lewis played third base on his rehab assignment, and we’re guessing he’ll get a start there tomorrow.
Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson said he’s “expecting Kyle [Pitts] to take a big jump.”
“Year 2 of the system. Year 2 of understanding what we’re trying to do offensively. All those things that come with it, so expecting a lot of good things from Kyle,” Robinson continued, presumably while trying to sell the people who asked him this question a bridge. The good news for those who would want to buy in on Pitts is, like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody is expecting a Pitts breakout year in his fifth season. He’s now a freeroll. But it’s hard to believe he’ll do any better than low-end TE1 duty this year.
After taking a seat Monday, Jasson Domínguez is DHing and batting fifth against Michael King and the Padres on Tuesday.
Paul Goldschmidt has the day off, so Domínguez, who is need of a big game or two, is hitting a little higher than usual. It’s lefties that Domínguez is struggling with, though all but one of his off days this year has come with a righty on the mound. The switch-hitter is batting .306/.377/.468 against righties and .083/.214/.167 versus lefties.
