Colorado football is one of the most polarizing programs in the entire landscape these days. When Deion Sanders is your head coach, those kinds of things are expected. Sanders has undoubtedly turned around this Buffaloes program in such a short time and a lot of that success can be attributed to two stars that came with him from Jackson State.

His son Shedeur at QB has been a revelation, but he's not even the best player on the field typically. Travis Hunter is a one-of-a-kind athlete that doesn’t just play both sides of the ball – he dominates. It doesn’t matter whether he’s at receiver or corner, he’s making a big impact.

Unfortunately for Colorado fans, and just football fans in general, he’s been in and out of the lineup the past couple of weeks. Will Travis Hunter play this week? We’ll discuss that, his NFL Draft projection and if he still has a chance at the Heisman or not.

Travis Hunter Injury Update: Sat Out Again Last Time Out

The injury to Travis Hunter first occurred a couple of weeks ago during their game against Kansas State. He banged up his shoulder and subsequently missed most of the second half of that game.

Things were looking bright when he started last week, but again, he sat in the second half. Colorado had a big lead, so it’s tough to say if Hunter was good enough to play in a must-win game. Regardless, he didn’t play much.

The Buffaloes take on a gritty Cincinnati squad in Week 9, needing Hunter’s talent on both sides of the ball.

Is Travis Hunter Playing This Week?

According to coach Sanders, “I think he will certainly contribute a lot more than he did a week ago because he's healthier.” It’s safe to say that Travis Hunter will definitely be playing this week, and the hope is that he’s able to complete the entire game this go around.

Considering who he is and what he figures to be in the future, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Buffs played it safe with Hunter. We’ll just have to see how Week 9 shakes out.

Colorado Football: Travis Hunter Stats, NFL Draft Projection & Heisman Odds

At wide receiver, Hunter has 51 catches for 604 yards and 6 touchdowns. Before the injury, he was snagging 7+ balls for at least 89 yards in every single contest, and had two separate performances of multi-touchdown games.

When lined up on defense at cornerback, you can add in 3 passes defended, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble as opposing QBs tend to avoid whatever receiver he’s covering. He also has yet to allow a touchdown at the Division I level.

All of this accumulates into Travis Hunter having an NFL Draft projection of first overall. He’s ranked the best prospect in the class by multiple outlets, but not the sportsbooks, apparently. On multiple platforms, including FanDuel Sportsbook, Hunter is listed at +750 to go #1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

This is behind both Carson Beck (+700) and his teammate Shedeur Sanders (+450). Even though he may be the best player, a QB-needy team won’t pass up on their guy at #1 if they think they’ve found him.

Finally, here are Travis Hunter’s Heisman odds and the current list of favorites at FanDuel:

  • Cameron Ward (Miami Florida) +200
  • Ashton Jeanty (Boise State) +200
  • Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) +350
  • Travis Hunter (Colorado) +1500
  • Cade Klubnik (Clemson) +2000

When Is The Heisman Announced & Who Won Last Year?

On December 2, 2024, the distribution of Heisman Trophy ballots will take place. December 9, 2024 is the voting deadline for the 2024 Heisman, which also marks the announcement of the Heisman Trophy finalists. And finally, once December 14, 2024, hits, the Heisman Trophy award ceremony is broadcasted on ESPN.

LSU quarterback and now Washington Commanders star rookie Jayden Daniels won last year’s award after an incredible season. Travis Hunter’s injury has stifled his chances, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he makes a hard push by season’s end.
