College Football Playoff Rankings: First 2024 CFP Release For CFB

*UPDATED: Friday, November 5, 2024 at 7:27 PM ET
We’ve finally made it, folks. We discussed the 2024 CFP picture last week and tonight, we finally get the first edition of 2024 CFP rankings. This article will be updated immediately following the CFP release with the current College Football Playoff rankings.
For now though, other than Oregon being the first overall seed, and then being accompanied by the other first-place conference teams behind them, there’s actually a bit of a mystery as to how the festivities will play out.
Add in the fact that this is the inaugural 12-team CFP, and things could look a whole lot different when it’s all said and done that some people may realize. However tonight shakes out, we’re here to provide the landscape of the nation heading into this CFP reveal, and then, like stated above, we’ll make updates when the actual rankings get announced.
Current NCAA Football Rankings: AP Top 25
To give some background, we’ll first lay out the current CFB AP Top 25. This will obviously look much different than the CFP rankings, but it gives us a general idea of who might be slotted where:

Player News
Brandon Nimmo is absent from Tuesday’s lineup due to illness.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Nimmo is getting an IV and might be available off the bench for Tuesday’s showdown at Citi Field. The 32-year-old authored the performance of a lifetime during Monday’s blowout victory, launching two homers and collecting nine RBI as part of a four-hit effort. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be José Azócar in left field on Tuesday night.
Ranger Suárez (back) will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.
It’s a bit unclear what the next steps are for Suárez with Taijuan Walker set to take the ball on Thursday against the Nationals. The 29-year-old lefty threw 78 pitches over the weekend in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and figures to be an option for the Phillies’ rotation at some point next week.
Patriots released LS Joe Cardona.
The team selected his replacement, Julian Ashby, in the seventh round of the draft. This snapper of balls who are longer than usual is only 33, and it’s possible he picks up his career elsewhere. There aren’t too many remaining Patriots Regimes in the wild in 2025, but Nick Caserio does still run the Texans and they let Jon Weeks walk this offseason so that’s one speculative fit.
Jeimer Candelario is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his lower back.
Candelario has played sparingly over the past few weeks and it appears a lingering lower back issue is part of the reason. The 31-year-old could potentially require an injured list stint to put the lingering issue to bed. There should be an update on his status at some point in the coming days.
Bennedict Mathurin (abdominals) is available for Game 5 against the Bucks on Tuesday.
Mathurin is available after sitting out Indiana’s Game 4 victory in Milwaukee. His return will likely result in fewer minutes for fellow reserve Ben Sheppard. Sheppard, who re-entered the Pacers’ rotation in Game 3 after Andrew Nembhard landed in early foul trouble, played 22 minutes in Game 4.
NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill said he would be “flabbergasted” if Derek Carr played for the Saints this year.
“I would have trouble understanding why you would allow that to happen, you’re trying to build a new culture, you can’t let that guy ... you just got a rookie QB, this is the example you’re going to give him,” Underhill continued. Both Underhill and Mike Triplett believe Tyler Shough will be starting for the Saints in Week 1, with Underhill saying he had “80 percent or higher odds to start 80 percent of the games this year.” Shough would be an uninspiring superflex pick, perhaps a QB3, but given how things have played out with Carr over the past months it sure doesn’t seem like the Saints have a reason to want to continue this relationship. Mickey Loomis literally asked reporters to stop asking him Carr questions at his pre-draft press conference.
