CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Tuesday, 10/28

Tuesday night’s Week 10 slate features a pair of college football games. Let’s focus on one of those for our CFB Best Bets. Kennesaw State is a 9.5-point favorite at home against UTEP in a Conference USA clash. This matchup features a 50.5 over/under as well. Good luck with your CFB picks!

UTEP vs. Kennesaw State Prediction: Tuesday, October 28th

Kennesaw State enters this game on a roll. The Owls have won 5 straight and are now 5-0 against non-power conference competition. They’re also the current betting favorites to win the Conference USA title.

Meanwhile, it’s been a rough season for UTEP, which sits at 2-5 heading into this matchup. The Miners’ only two wins have come against FCS UT Martin and a winless Sam Houston squad. Otherwise, they’ve lost their 5 other games by an average of 13 PPG with 4 double-digit deficits.

All signs point to Kennesaw State winning this week by a comfortable margin. The offense is clicking, with 45 and 35 points scored over the past two games. The Owls are also averaging 31.8 PPG over the past 5 contests. They can set a high bar against a UTEP defense that’s allowed 27+ points in 4 of 6 games vs. FBS opponents.

The Kennesaw State run game has especially found its stride, gaining 4.86 yards per carry in conference play. UTEP ranks 89th nationally in rush yards allowed per game and could have issues stopping the run here. The Owls have used two quarterbacks this year, but both have been productive. Amari Odom has a 70.8% completion rate, while Dexter Williams threw for 290 yards and 4 TDs in his last start two games ago. Both bring dual-threat upside as well.

On the other side, UTEP has struggled on offense for much of the season. The Miners are averaging just 17.5 PPG vs. FBS competition, which ranks 122nd in the country. The offense also comes in at 135th nationally in EPA/Play and 134th in success rate.

It’s hard to imagine UTEP keeping pace on the scoreboard with Kennesaw State. In their past two games, the Owls beat FIU by 19 points and Louisiana Tech by 28 points. Both are tougher opponents than what UTEP offers today.

CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Wednesday, 10/29

Let’s now focus on Wednesday night’s slate for our CFB best bets. Middle Tennessee hosts Jacksonville State in another Conference USA game. This should be a close contest between league opponents, but we’re targeting the total instead for our CFB predictions.

Jacksonville State vs. Middle Tennessee Prediction: Wednesday, October 29th

Take the under in this C-USA matchup. Middle Tennessee has one of the worst offenses in college football. The Blue Raiders are averaging 18.6 PPG, which ranks 124th in the FBS. They also come in at 111th nationally in total offense.

It’s hard to see Middle Tennessee scoring much on Wednesday. The offense is 113th in the country in EPA/Play and 90th in success rate. The Blue Raiders have a bottom-tier rushing attack (122nd in EPA/Rush) and aren’t much better through the air (95th in EPA/Pass).

Meanwhile, Jacksonville State’s defense is just good enough to keep its opponent in check here. The Gamecocks are 50th in the country in defensive EPA/Rush, which will make it tough for Middle Tennessee to have any success on the ground. It’ll force the Blue Raiders into a pass-heavy offense, which could backfire. QB Nick Vattiato has thrown 5 interceptions over his last 6 games while being inconsistent game-to-game.

On the other side, Jacksonville State relies on a run-dominant offense. The Gamecocks rank 4th nationally in rush attempts per game and 3rd in rushing yards per game. They run the ball at one of the highest clips in the sport and don’t shy away from it.

Well, Middle Tennessee is actually tough against the run. The defense ranks 31st in the country in EPA/Rush, 56th in rushing success rate, and 53rd in rush yards allowed per game to FBS opponents. The Blue Raiders will be stacking the box and going all out to stop the Jacksonville State run game.

It is a bit worrisome that Middle Tennessee has a poor pass defense. However, Jacksonville State doesn’t have the passing attack to exploit that weakness. The Gamecocks are 130th in the sport in passing yards per game and 125th in EPA/Pass offensively. Plus, QB Cam Creel comes in banged up, which could hamper his accuracy. Creel is a run-first dual-threat guy anyway, but his rushing effectiveness may be limited as well.
