Luis L. Ortiz picked up a win over his former team by holding the Pirates to two runs over five innings on Friday night.
As might have been expected after the Pirates traded him in the offseason, Ortiz had a little something extra on his pitches tonight; his 96.8 mph average on his fastball topped his previous season high of 96.2. He bettered it just once in his 15 starts last year. He struck out eight, his second highest total in 38 career starts. The high of 10 was established in his previous start versus the Royals. Ortiz struggled all spring and had an 8.44 ERA in his first two regular-season starts, but maybe he’s figured a little something out now? Or maybe he’s just faced two of MLB’s coldest offenses in his last two starts. Let’s see how he fares against the Yankees next week before considering him in mixed leagues.
Red Sox SS prospect Marcelo Mayer went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer on Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester.
It’s unclear how much longer the Red Sox can keep Meyer on the doorstep of the big leagues with veteran Trevor Story continuing to struggle. The 22-year-old top prospect is hitting .275 with eight homers, 38 RBI and one steal in 35 games this season at the Triple-A level. He offers some multi-position defensive versatility, if Boston wants to get creative with their infield mix, but he projects as the organization’s shortstop of the future. His time is coming.
Jonathan Aranda went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Donovan Mitchell accumulated 35 points (8-of-25 FGs, 15-of-21 FTs), nine rebounds, one assist, four steals, one block and four three-pointers in 37 minutes in Tuesday’s Game 5 loss to the Pacers.
Mitchell scored at least 33 points in four of the series’ five games, but efficiency was an issue in Tuesday’s series finale. He shot just 32 percent from the field, boosting his point total with frequent trips to the foul line. Sometimes, Mitchell appeared to be impacted by his injured left ankle, but many players are dealing with an injury at this stage in the season. While he did not live up to his Yahoo! ADP of 17, the Cavaliers’ star offered third-round value in nine-cat formats during the regular season. Mitchell won’t be worth selecting with a first-round pick in 12-team drafts next fall, but he should not drop out of the second round.
Junior Caminero went 1-for-5 with a grand slam against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Daulton Varsho went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI against the Rays on Tuesday.
Jeff Hoffman allowed five runs, blew the save and took the loss against the Rays on Tuesday.
