Cardinals reached agreement with former Patriots DT Tommy Kelly on a one-year deal.
The loss of Darnell Dockett was a big blow to the Cardinals defensive line. While Kelly is nowhere near the pass-rusher Docket was, he\'ll be extremely helpful with regard to the Cardinals run defense.
Free-Agent DT Tommy Kelly will visit the Cardinals on Tuesday.
The veteran defensive tackle played in only five games for the Patriots last season after spending his entire nine year career in Oakland. The Patriots released Kelly, which is why he\'s a free agent. The Cardinals have already lost some players from on defense, so they will reach out to Kelly for some help.
Patriots have released Defensive end Will Smith and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Sunday.
Smith missed all of last season with a torn ACL, and there wasn\'t much expected from him this year, but the Kelly release comes as a surprise. Originally believed to be starting alongside Vince Wolfork, the Patriots must have seen something they didn\'t like for the long-term. Kelly\'s season ws cut short last year due to a knee injury, so maybe there are some lingering issues. His name-recognition alone should get him a few invitations from other teams now, though.
Tommy Kelly is practicing on Saturday, so he's been activated from the PUP list.
The Patriots veteran defensive lineman played in just five games in 2013 after going down with a season-ending injury in October. Now that he is back in the mix he makes for a low-end IDP target if he still displays the ability to get to the quarterback like we have seen in year\'s past.
