Chargers re-signed QB Chase Daniel to a one-year, $2.25 million contract.
Now 35, Daniel didn't attempt a single pass last season, his first in L.A. as Justun Herbert's backup. No. 2 quarterback work is solid work if you can get it.
Chargers signed QB Chase Daniel, formerly of the Lions, to a one-year contract.
We are all jealous of Daniel's career. He's now made $40 million while only attempting 261 passes throughout his career. In Los Angeles, Daniel will be the Chargers' clipboard quarterback and serve as a mentor to Justin Herbert. His signing figuratively ends the Easton Stick experiment.
Lions released QB Chase Daniel.
The Lions reportedly tried to trade the veteran backup but unsurprisingly found no takers. The move saves the Lions $2.3 million in cap space, leaving behind $3 million in dead money. Daniel has started five games in his 11-year career and should resurface as an experienced "coach" and clipboard-holder.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Lions "have had trade discussions with other teams regarding their backup QB Chase Daniel."
Daniel has been in the NFL for a decade and has earned a total of five starts. He has thrown eight touchdowns and seven interceptions on his 261 career pass attempts. Despite his lack of starting talent, Schefter added that "Daniel has been considered an ideal mentor for young QBs." It's hard to remember a time that a team traded for a quarterback because of their teaching abilities but it likely won't require much to purchase Detroit's backup passer. Daniel learned how to mentor young quarterbacks while serving as Drew Brees' backup for four years across two stints with New Orleans, according to Schefter. He most recently started for the Bears in 2019, throwing two scores and two interceptions in a losing effort to Oakland.
